I think that you are taking way to general of a look at the album. It really encases itself in it's own little galaxy when you listen to it the whole way through. You listened to it and picked at it piece by piece dissecting a few songs from it. Not to mention that you only discussed the more rock-esk side of the album and neglected the much more calm side. Your review was alright but I think if you listen to it in the state of mind that it is supposed to flow through like a fantasy your opinion may change.

that's not true at all. I listened to it pretty many times all the way through, formed an opinion, then picked specific parts of the
album that best supported my opinion. And sorry, but I don't think saying I just listened wrong helps your argument.

and seriously guys? 4 negs? is this THAT bad? : (

EDIT: just realized 6/7 of your albums rated 4 or greater are Emily Haines' I think that explains it.

There is your problem ;)

The vocals don’t bring the album down, it just sounds like she would be much better suited over a lone acoustic guitar rather than heavily produced, guitar-based songs
They did end up releasing a short EP of acoustic versions actually. It's well done, but I prefer her vocals on the album.

haha... and yes I've heard it! Help I'm Alive (acoustic) is fantastic!

You might like Emily Haines' solo album then, it's sort of similar to the acoustic Help I'm Alive. Not quite as catchy and a bit darker, but it's a good listen. I'd recommend Our Hell, Doctor Blind, and Crowd Surf Off a Cliff.

Yes, I may be biased but it's still not as bad as you think. It's not as good as some of their older stuff but it's not a 2.5, it has a flow that really can fit.

persoanlly, I feel like the unbalanced songs, quality-wise, really breaks up any flow... a few FANTASTIC singles and then some downright unlistenable tracks don't make for a great complete album.

Fair enough, I saw them live and it really changed my entire perspective on the album, I originally thought it was relatively average.

I interviewed Metric actually haha... that was pretty long after I wrote this... and yes, I agree, they're spectacular live!

Yeah Emily's not the worst looking girl in the world, and she's very very nice too! there was a mix-up with her tour manager but she took the whole thing into her own hands and gave me a nice interview! I shouldn't have been surprised at how nice she was, but I was haha

I'm surprised you didn't mention "Sick Muse" and "Stadium Love," two other stand-out tracks from this album. Both are quite upbeat and catchy, and, after hearing them and the lead-off single "Help I'm Alive" played quite a few times on my local indie radio station, were all the additional reasons I needed to go out and purchase this.
