This was awful. And i was so excited because II was great. But this was garbage. There were no memorable songs on the entire album. I actually, which i rarely ever do during a first listen, had to skip a couple songs. Just bad.

Be lesss stingy, you arn't real music critics. You can say whatever you want but I loved this album way better then anything else they've made. everyone's a critic, and "you can say whatever you want" but I hated this album

Boring, their first two albums rape the shit out of this.

I just feel that people these days arn't as sensitive to music as they use to be, and people treat it as a product to rate rather then what it is. Music. this is something I can agree with, sometimes I get the same feeling, well said

Well, music is a product. People go out and buy there cds and merchandise so, therefore, it is a product. And people want to get the best that they can out of the products they buy. So people rate it to help others, and themselves, put it at a level where one can compare other cd's to each other. Makes perfect sense. Music always has and always will be a product.

I interpreted what you said as music is not going to be a product soon

Themimm: "I must admit it took a while to get used to it, but after a few listens I started to pick up the subtleties of the lyrics. There is still some really powerful stuff in there and just because BT aren't grinding out another album in the same vein as I and II doesn't mean it's a bad thing."
Completely right. Musically the album isn't *quite* as interesting as I or II, but the lyrics are actually really good. Again, yes, there are some that are cringe-worthy or fall flat, but take "Pocketful of Dreams". A song that comes across as terrible (especially the title) until you read the lyrics:
Vanities are only charity
And she makes donations at the Tiffany's,
Life is hard without a credit card to get by
She sold her dreams for security
To a man that now she hardly ever sees
With a cold martini in her hand, she don't mind
So throw all your luxuries aside
You can't take them with you when you die
Still when I look into your
Eyes are full of dollar signs
Reach, into a pocketful of dreams
Now, before they fall out of the seams
Take a chance, don't matter if you fail
you're too scared to try cause you might break a nail
Not amazing, but there's definite meaning in there. And there are lots of great musical bits. The chorus of "The Dead Can't Testify" is powerful, and "Diamond on a Landmine" stands out from all the other tracks. Vocal harmonies, good lyrics, a driving and cutting sound...
The more I listen to this album, the more I like it. I loved I and II and III was just an absolute failure to me the first time I listened to it. It almost seems like the production is TOO smooth and TOO tight, because it makes the entire album completely even and flat. Underneath is a surprising amount of depth and complexity.

Diamond On A Landmine is a great song. But don't suggest that people haven't tried hard enough with this record... I was fully prepared to review this with a tag line like "How do they keep doing it?" and I've played this record over 25 times through. Just doesn't have enough about it for the most part (except the guitar lines.)
And the lyrics you just quoted are pretty average... except for the 5th and 6th lines of the 2nd stanza.

Hence the sentence "Not amazing, but there's definite meaning there." I'm trying to counter the whitewashing going on here.

Soupstorm: "....III was just an absolute failure to me the first time I listened to it."
I think a lot of people who love this album felt exactly the same, including myself. It takes a while to grow on you because, understandably, you're expecting something similar to their previous releases.
The fact that the went in a slightly different, albeit more mainstream, direction is something to be applauded, not abhorred. If a band keeps churning out the same sound all the time then they're not even challenging themselves to do anything different; whereas if they try new things they can only succeed - musically and commercially. The fans they lose are a small price to pay for making a record that they felt was right.

This album has some VERY good songs, my favourite two have to be Diamond on a Landmine and Rusted from the Rain.
The album definitely deserves more credit than you have given it.

idk, i still haven't given this a fair straight-through listen, but i don't see this drop in quality everyone seems to be yacking about...it's different and not as fast, but a lot of the songs are really quite good...

I think I'm gonna print this off and post it on my wall. The knowledge that I can stir up this kind of hatred from a simple review makes me feel giddy inside.
