sometimes you're a real meanie pants...i read the review, it's just that when you cover an artist that has such a vast array of material, saying syl fans might not like the sound doesn't say much b/c a predominant amount of fans that would follow the name know what his "mellow" stuff sounds like, or at least think they do...the summary says HevyDevy mellows out but he has showed many flashes of mellow in his catalogue...

without giving at least some comparison to his "mellow"-er work is silly and either shows a lack of background in the artist (which is fine, i feel each album shud be judged on its own, but then there's no reason to mention ziltoid...not to mention you haven't heard the album so you have no basis for anything except select tracks, a rather useless background) or a rushed review you felt you had to do because you interviewed the guy

i'm not trying to say you didn't explain what it sounded like, i'm saying comparisons to his other solo stuff, even if it's just to say there's no way to compare, would help

I'm expecting a Terria-ish album from this for whatever reason, and, other than the fact you say the wall-of-sound production is gone, i'm still expecting the same thing...

then you're stupid

i'm writing a review of this album. i'm not writing a compare/contrast essay. this is already twice as long as it needed to be. it's not my job to give you a step-by-step summary nor is it my job to contrast it with his discography. i talked about how it doesn't sound like syl, i talked about how it's both tight and loose, i talked about how it's an album of highs and lows but ultimately a quiet album, i talked about how he still shouts, i talked about his bluesy guitar work, i talked about how expansive it is. i compared it to his latest major release, i explained that it wasn't ambient and i gave both specific and generic examples of it's overall sound.

ya got that, but you didn't listen to ziltoid so you have no ground to stand on...and do you read your own reviews? Most of them are history lessons that call on artists' past work to define, in your opinon, their new album...it's why i like your reviews and maybe i just feel slighted because you didn't do it here...either way mentioning an album you haven't heard, simply put, is an amateur move...

what are you talking about? I've heard a few songs. I mentioned this. Then I said "it probably sucked, this definitely doesn't". It was an introduction.

holy fuck this is awesome!!! one of those albums where the music kinda washes over you - like post-rock in a way, but more in feel than actual sound. i can't wait til all four albums are out and i can listen back-to-back!!!

Review is alright apart from the first paragraph, which is just shit. Ziltoid is a very good album with a deep concept. And I'd say it's pretty personal to Devin. Most don't see the connection to the artist itself, but rather only notice the wacky space alien who is addicted to coffee.

Solar Winds, Hyperdrive, The Greys and some others are top quality Devin tracks.

Oh and Ki is superb.

right on.

great review, pretty accurate. i was under the impression that it was still referred to as the artist "devin townsend", and this span of albums was called Devin Townsend Project, but i guess i was wrong. i read most of the interview, remind me, he didn't say anything about the sound of album 4 did he?

Nah, not explicitly, but the rumour is it will be kind of "new-age-y" and he did sort of hint at that when he said only this and the fourth record have the calmer, quieter production styles. Regarding the Devin Townsend Project name, he seems inclined on separating his works (be they Devin Townsend, The Devin Townsend Band, Devin Townsend Project, Strapping Young Lad) and so I just followed that. Though it would be convenient if we had any sort of artist link.

Thats fair, each 'project' has been different i guess.

New-age-y could mean a lot of things, like electronic new agey, new age hippy, allsorts - although i hope it will be orchestrated, that would rule. I'm sure it will be a fitting end, whatever it is.

1st complete listen lead me to mixed feeling...the first half was amazing and kept me completely mesmerized, then it seemed to lose all steam after trainfire with only that big build-up track (not sure the number or name) saving it...idk yet...

Apparently this will be the softest of the 4 albums. The third will be 'the heaviest thing hes ever done'
