Lyrically and, to a lesser extent, conceptually amazing (no surprise there); however I still don't find it much better than good several listens later. I think it has grown all it wants to, which was very little.

so The Rake's Song has taken over my speakers.

imo this is their best album...i really can't name one song that feels like a drop in quality. every other album had a song or two like that, even The Crane Wife.

Ugh. Does anyone else miss the infectious catchy pop-sensible Decemberists? This album is terribly disappointing. It's hard to believe that this is the same band that wrote Grace Cathedral Hill...This Message Edited On 03.25.09

There are plenty of fantastic, infectious melodies here. Plus this is much more musically impressive. Any mediocre indie band can write a couple catchy little pop songs...this album is so beyond that. It's called evolution.

"Much more musically impressive" is a moot point.

For this album's sake, I hate to even mention the word metal. It just introduces a whole new element of comparison that I, personally, want to avoid. This comes from a guy who listens to The Decemberists as often as Mirrorthrone.

Really good album. Their first fully consistent album, and I would argue their best.

I didn't mean to say that The Crane Wife (or any of their albums) were just simple little pop songs. What I meant was this album has just as many of "pop-sensible" melodies in addition to being more consistant and varied than their earlier stuff, which is what I assume Zorg was referring to.
