I've listened to the streaming on the myspace, and although enjoyable, I just miss the heavy groove they had on "Leviathan". "Blood Mountain" was underwhelming and this new one looks like it's more of the same.

I'm as open minded as you get when it comes to all the genres/subgenres of metal and don't judge a band on whether they start incorporating clean vocals or not. If it makes the sound better, why not? But I'm not convinced this is the case with Mastodon. I just miss the wolf-like screams and the intensity of the songs. On divindations, the vocals sound like Ozzy Osbourne - and that's not a good thing!!!

yep...it has nothing to do with it being not metal/heavy enough. It's just underwhelming...especially seeing as I'm not a guitar nerd. All style and no substance!

This album is the defnition of zazz. You guys are just homos and not metal enough to appreciate the zazzieness of this album.

I'm surprised it took so long for someone to review this, but this is an excellent first. It's one I pretty much agree with as well, I've got this at 3.5 now, but I can definitely see this rising. Blood Mountain is the only other Mastodon album I have, and as you said, this totally owns that.

oh it's good and all but i really like those remission days better, they were heavy then and now it's completely different and i think if they continue down this path they will be stuck as too light and suck.

also wher is the intensity? those old harsh vocaly are much better in my opinion and added ferocity to already great songs, sad face. This Message Edited On 03.23.09

Album's growing on me. Still don't think it'll top Leviathan, but so far, it's sounding better than Blood Mountain. I'll reserve my judgment on it until later.

I've never heard these guys before, and figured it was about time to give into the hype. I like the music but am not a fan of the vocals at all.
