Been listening to this a lot today - think it's got a few keepers, but I don't really care for the way his voice plays off over funk on the opener or for Wild Billy's as a song
When he hits it off though, it's huge. Though less poetic, his lyrics remind me loosely of Nick Cave's in that there's such a clear dramatic/emotional charge that they'd practically demand music even if they hadn't been written for it. Unlike Cave + co, who mostly format their shit pretty succinctly for succinct song-units, I feel the E Street bois mostly set Bruce up to run away with himself a la full epic ramble and mmm Incident, Rosalita and Kitty's Back have so much weight to them that they deserve nothing left. Props for how naturally the understated closer unfolds too - really smooth band effort, doesn't feel remotely 10 minutelike
