i haven't heard one "thrash" song in st anger and the singles off this record didn't even really have one "thrash" moment. just sounded like hard rock. i have no problems with bands changing their sound, but for metallica, i don't know, it just doesn't work cause it sounds like they are still trying to be thrash

Anyone else think that "That was just your life" sounds like Dream Theater's "Constant Motion"
I don't think it does, but Constant Motion you can tell there is a huge Metallica influence in there.
I like Dream Theater a lot better than Metallica though. Just a side note.

This album is amazing. 4.5 for me.

Having Cyanade and Unforgiven III back to back doesn't help
Except Unforgiven III is mega awesome.

foreverendeared is an overly negative individual.
Hurm.

i had much higher expectations for this album.. theres only like one or two songs that are headbangable, and the riffs are often boring and there are like 16 bar solos that just seem to be there to make the song longer instead of to elevate the song.. which is what solos are meant to do

I agree with this review the most.......even though the ratings around here are a little generous.

Is the mastering as bad as I'm told? I heard it was so ridiculously compressed and clipped that it's a real pain to listen to

For the most part I think its exaggerated, but it can get pretty bad at times...the snare gets awfully loud at some points and it gets distorted a bit, and the cymbals almost sound like a drum machine to me...This Message Edited On 09.13.08

Yeah, some parts are really over compressed. The clipping over the cymbals can become pretty bad as well, other then that James' vocals are the low point for the album, plus the occasional unnecessarily long intro.

I liked James' vocals more than I have before actually. Something about the guitar tones in the solos sounds a bit off too...I dunno...the solos actually weren't all that great either IMO...This Message Edited On 09.13.08

Sounded fine to me. Rubin >>>>>>> Bob Rock.

Rubin isn't a recording engineer, he's more of an artistic force. He's not out there pulling XLR cables being at war with annoying mic stands.
He's been there to say yeigh and neigh to ideas, but it isn't solely down to him of how the album sounds. Bob Rock is different in this regard as he has more of an imposing force with the acts he works with (not always).
He isn't a mastering engineer either.
It's right down to the mastering that's given a lot of the album the at times intense compression, and abrasive top end.

I swear to god on first glance you wrote masturbating engineer.
haha
oh, that was awesome.

Rick Rubin has a tendency to be on albums that are horribly mastered. Ones that are both flat and compressed yet somehow overly "loud" to the point where shit just blends together. He may not physically be the one to master these albums but to act like it's a coincidence would be naive.
