give it a few more spins... even the initial few i enjoyed on their myspace have drastically lost value to me

ok, Neon Blonde does rule but not in a diminishing way
|

well I just wrote my first ever review on this album. I might post it tomorrow.
|
| |
^please do... i think this review is honest but not incredibly accurate.
|
| |
Lol how is it not accurate?
I think you made an excellent review, no doubt, but tho your musical demands weren't met by this, it is fairly uncertain how the lay listener will react
The entire record feels very unhinged, but it never pays off with any kind of real excitement or musical epiphany, and neither does it really stick in your head
"real excitement... neither does it really stick in your head" are modestly subjective at worst and i've been surprised at how much random (and mean random) friends of mine have completely dug this thus far.
More than anything, i believe the bb split will indicate the two layers of fans that they had; those that dug complexity and foreign ground and those that love to sing along and maybe dance a bit
there. another one of my ridiculous comment soundoffs

got this yesterday on the strength of "highways of gold," and although i never really got into the blood brothers, i actually find this to be a pretty good record. although i can imagine his vocals might start to grate after a while so i'll hold off giving it a rating for now...
|
| |
I was hoping it would be good, but it isn't. Johnny doesn't have what it takes to be a solo singer, his voice really relied on Jordan.
|
| |
^it is better with repeated listens. first impressions aren't likely to hold with any johnny project
|
| |
hahaha. have you tried to get into again since your first impression, hanson?
|
| |
are you a fan of his other vocal displays ("camouflage, camouflage" "live at the apocalypse cabaret" etc)?
|
| |
counterpointed for the sake of my ignorance, please explain this musical concept
|
| |
oh, like a call and response? you know what, i'll look it up.
caterwauling... nice

I wouldn't say that past lives "absolutely" does "not" stack up to blood brothers. I think its immeasurable. Past Lives is so fresh its unbelievable. I'm obsessed with the record right now. I can't wait for an LP.
And this is not as bad as I thought it was. Granted PastLives>NeonBlonde>This imo
And for some reason I feel like this was just rushed out, the concepts on the album don't feel like they were followed through with completely, like there was some competition between the two bands.
Highway of Gold lost it's appeal, but other songs on the album are growing on me
Bats over the pacific ocean is tight.

i dont understand why people are still comparing to the blood brothers...
the only comparison i see are that it's lyrics are fantastic and johnny still has that voice that sounds like baby getting torchered.
this album is awesome,it reminds me of neon blonde minus the excessive keyboards.
there maybe no blood brothers but this isnt a bad way to depart from it.
i havent heard past lives but i hear that they're an epic win
