Must have missed this completely when I was away. Nice job for a Giants(Jets?) fan. I just decided to get to their myspace finally and yeah, I like it. Warm Hands was rad, I will get this after all.

yes, a real drum set. like on "forbidden tracks" when the drums kick in the first time they are programmed, but when it stops then comes back in its real drums until the chorus-y part then real drums on the solo. and "sunset dept." its real drums as well and "that missing week" is too.

i have, by nature, an instinctive wariness of any album that gets too much praise by too many people. i hate bandwagons and how blindly, and frequently, we all submit ourselves to them.

so i had been putting off listening to this, until now. i got up and decided that today, i was finally ready to give this record an honest shot. i'd avoided reading too many comments about it, i'd let some time pass since the moment i saw everyone worshipping it, and i was ready to listen to it without preconceptions. something told me it deserved that much at least.

so, i got to work(where 90% of my musical exploration is done) and started off with the two best tracks from Blut Aus Nord's Odinist: The Destruction of Reason by Illumination. completely unrelated form of music, except that they too value composition and exploration, and reject stagnation. after listening to these two songs("Odinist" and "The Cycle of the Cycles," if any metalheads are interested), i set Soundtrack to a Vacant Life in motion, still a little wary of what might be in store. experience has taught me that a shameful majority of album praise is nothing more than self-gratifying mutual masturbation. generally speaking, the higher and more uncompromising the praise, the less interesting the album's music actually is.

well, now i'm on "No Runnign Water" from this album. "Leaving Georgia" is just around the corner, and since you describe it as a turning point for the album i'll get up to get a much-needed glass of water before continuing.

i am absolutely parched. but i don't care. this work has indeed caught me by the balls and not let go. this is easily in the top tier of this year's best music - in fact, it deserves mention outside the context of this year alone. this is an absolute masterpiece.

so far, i have 893 albums rated on this site. i've only been able to give a rating of 5 to eight of those, and a rating of 4.5 to only 17. most music just doesn't deserve anything above a 3.5 at best. i've already given the highest rating to another of this year's albums - Mirrorthrone's Gangrene- and i don't feel entirely comfortable giving two such ratings for one year in music. but depending on how the upcoming second half of this album goes, i may just be forced too. and if it's not a 5, it's still a 4 at a minimum; just amazing, incredible work. This Message Edited On 08.29.08This Message Edited On 08.29.08

no, i'm an intelligent person who sees that most music isn't as good as it's made out to be. try not to make yourself sound stupid
