As a fairly non-metalcore kind of person (apart from maybe Trivium) I personally believe that the vocals are a vast improvement.

Oh yeah UnskathedGuitar- actually the guitar parts fit with the music well, they are not just shredding wankery and besides Synyster Gates is showing off an immense talent.

I was not a big fan of A7X before this album (yes Chapter 4 was alrite but to me WTF wasn't great and SST to me was fairly mediocre-possibly just because I can't really get into metalcore) but my mate lent me City of Evil and it really did blow me away.

Excellent drums, excellent 4-guitar-quadrio, and good baseline. =D This was a crazy album, and WTF doesn't compare.

Great review- 2 Gripes: How could you diss MIA and BatH? MIA was a great song, and deserved a 9 or 9.5 or something. BatH's chorus was awesome too. Very interesting chord placement (the F)

Well I personally think that A7X is used to reinventing their sound with different albums. Now I havent heard much off of their first album but Sounding the Seventh Trumpet was real punk hardcore thrash where as Walking the Fallen was more of a Nu-Metalistic type sound and with their new one it feels to me like they're bring the two together almost. Anyway I like it.

When i first heard this album, i thought, wtf this doesn't sound right without the screaming vocals, but then i really got into it and it is an amazing record.

Btw the review was spot on.

This album is really sweet. heavy, but dont call them metal gods, obviously u dont listen to metal. There are some stunning riffs tho on here and i do like the progression but its still nowhere even close to as good as their old stuff.

ill give it a 4/5 however

The fact that Gates has talent doesn't also mean that he's using it to make great music, and the same goes for the whole band. I have a low threshhold for power metal and for nasal singing, so that makes this album no greater than 3.0. There was at least some emotion in Waking the Fallen, but it seems the band sat down and started writing while thinking about the pay-off rather than about emotion or making good music for this one. For those who are handing the 5's out like candy, listen to "Animals" by Pink Floyd. Or, if you want a modern album that's better, listen to Thrice's "Illusion of Safety."

Shut your mouth Riley12988. Avenged is an amazing band with alot of talent. I'm sure they put in just as much effort as in Waken The Fallen, but i agree with Illusion of Safety by Thrice wich is a wicked album. I still find A7X better tho but that's just my oppinion.

i rated city of evil a 5 out of 5 and i think its the best 1, followed by waking the fallen and then sounding the seventh trumpet.

my favorite song on the cd was trashed and scattered and im glad it got rated a 10 out of 10 ;)This Message Edited On 07.19.05

They didn't sell out or anything.. Shadows lost his voice, literally... He can't scream anymore.

Which means that City of Evil is essentially lame 80's metal. COE and STST are very, very similar to one another... The vocals are weak, and the song writing is just... a mistake. If only they had spun off of Waking the Fallen instead of STST. Oh well. Another one bites the dust.

it wasn't a great review. it was a piece of crap fanboy pile of garbage. And I can't get over the lack of screaming. Know why? Because their music isn't good enough to exist without the energy bang that Shadows' awesome scream gave it. Whiny, nasal vocals DESTROY this album. Even the singing itself was better in WTF. blah.
For christ's sake, get over the no screaming, its never coming back, and i dont think it should, i saw them live and the old songs are better without his screaming because his voice is dead-on live
Things sound a lot better when you're in the moment, but when you look back on it, it doesn't necessarily sound as good. That always happens.

This is the greatest album that I've heard this year. This is another band that I can't really be unbiased about, I've been a fan since the very start and the guitar work of A7X is one of the main reasons for me to pick up my guitar and practice my ass off when I was in a slump and felt I would never improve.

I have had this album from the release date and I'm still listening to it more frequently than any other album in my collection. It's just not getting old and every song feel like at least a 4.5/5 to me. Ok I could jibber on endlessly about this band but I'm just going to shut up, I think I made the point that I love this band loud and clear.

If they put out just 1 more great album I'm getting that Hell-Bat tattooed this band has been a huge influence on me.

Listen to Bat Country or Trashed and Scattered, surely his vocals arn't terrible in either of those songs. Not your cup of tea, maybe, but terrible? Please... in some places his voice is even pretty strong. This Message Edited On 08.25.05

I think this is such a superb album. My personal favorite song is "M.I.A" and I think it could be up there with "I Won't See You Tonight Part 1." Great album.
