Wow...this is a pretty old thread...

Anyway, I think this album is one of the best of the past 10 years, and the level of harmony in it stands against the Beatles best works. Hopefully the RHCP continue evolving their sound.

Finally!! Me and zero agree on something. I agree, this album is a classic, and I wish more people would recognise it as such.

chili peppers were VERY mediocre on the funk side of things, with the only 2 songs on BSSM worth listening to being suck my kiss and obviously under the bridge (though i've overlistened to that song far far too much, but i love the riff and fricianti's playing on the video). thsi album is worse than californication in terms of depth and innovation. all thsi album seems to be is a number of radio friendly songs directly steered towards selling millions. i mean, the lyrics and vocals are so flat and boring. obviously, flea excels (as if he culdn't) yadiyadiya, blah blah.... even tho he;'s great, i feel the chilis only worth while songs on this album are by the way, cabron (finally, some kind of different sound!!) and....ummm.....venice queen maybe. the rest is all commercial, parent appealing boring and predictable. also, may i add, give it away is crap and could someone explain to me why EVERYBODY seems to love it (apart from keidis's little give it-t-t-t-l-l-laway bit - which is - which is also annoying), actually, explain why BSSM is good cus i find it monotonus and samy and just crap! ok ,enough bitchin, cahd smith is amazing live but always sooo poor on albums, why?!?!?! they are a band that should and could do better.
I am a Peppers fan as well, and my opinion is that By the way is their best album ever, and one of the best albums I have ever heard. I may not be as much into funk as the 'average' Peppers fan, which may be why I like this album this much. And I agree, if the RHCP hadn't evolved and would still be playing funk exclusively, they would be gone by now. Frusciante is a genius, my favourite guitar player, for his ability to write relatively simple guitar lines, but so **** beautiful... Just listen to his solos on the Slane DVD, they are no shred (I hate shred), but his solos send shivers down my spine everytime.
I like the mellowness and the diversity on By the way, it shows the RHCP have evolved, matured, and are capable of not only playing and writing what they want to, but doing it extremely well too...

Just my two cents...
I like what your saying here man, sure the funk punk rock side of the chilis might not appeal to some people (personally, its my favourite side - bssm and freaky styley both amazing funk albums) but the band are getting older and needed to broaden their horizons a bit, much as we'd love them to the peppers cant stay funky all their lives...but i do agree with your comments on the Slane DVD, i was so amazed at frusciantes perfect playing at that gig and wondered why, with all this obvious soloing and improvising talent that man has it's hardly featured on any of their records. the solos on By The Way seem a bit scripted to me, prewritten to suit the song more (which i must say can work, but they could have been far better).
Personally, I liked By The Way. It was the first chilis album i ever heard and impressed me at the time, but also gave me the wrong impression of the band. I went back and bought, or copied (oh how cheap!) some of their earlier work; blood sugar, californication, mothers milk and most recently freaky styley and was amazed by the quality of these songs. From going to a very modern, less-funked more mellowed album such as By the Way to these incredible album landmarks of the chilis.
In short, By The Way definatly not the best album, though some songs are pretty sweet - such as the utterly beautiful Dosed, Can't Stop and the incredible Venice Queen (
I love Throw Away Your Television. Tear is also awesome. This is my 2nd favorite Chili Peppers album, behind Californication (Sorry guys, all the focusing on funk never really did anything for me)

You can't write reviews for you life...we would you go through every song? lame.
anyway...
I just went to the Hyde Park Concert last night, it was great, but not the best. Their support was the worst I have ever seen, Chicks on Speed should be imprisoned, but James Brown is the man.
They played a new song, 'Fortune Faded' an old punk cover and 'My Lovely Man,' which was fantastic. The only probable was the lame London 'By The Way-ist' crowd that were mostly over thirty and just drunk all the time so they didn' listen to most of it  no where near enough jumping and rockign to their old song as a result  I had hoped they would play more of thier older stuff as it was their Greatest Hits tour, but oh well i was still fun.
Anyone else go?
I love the chilis and their last three albums have been amazing. By The Way is my least favourite, but it is still excellent, I sort of agree with your review...etc. Blood Sugar was the best, it had a run of fourteen perfect songs, right up My Lovely Man, which really didn't do anything for me, Sir Psycho average at best but then they pulled it back with Red Hot! Californication was obviously more 'mature' and in some ways was 'balanced' a bit better, don't ask me to explain. The guitar on that album was much more prominent.
Hate to disappoint you but Blood Sugar Sex Magik isn't one of their last three albums. You're forgetting One Hot Minute, which in my opinion, is one of the best.

Anyway, I have every 'official' album they have released so I know what I'm comparing to when I say that By The Way is most deffinatly not the best album, and I also believe it is not in the top 5. Sure it shows they have 'matured', but that isn't always what's best for the music. I think in By The Way they are really wasting Fleas talents as a bassist. He is one of the best bassists in the world, so I think they should really use that to their advantage. I'm not saying that the only way to make a good song is to have a really complicated bassline, but if you have the chance to do that then take it. I'm also not saying that By The Way is utter crap, I just don't think it's up to par with some of their other stuff.

In my opinion, the best albums (excluding the 5 track Abbey Road E.P.) are as follows:

1. Mother's Milk
2. One Hot Minute
3. The Uplift Mofo Party Plan/Blood Sugar Sex Magik
4. Californication
5. Freaky Styley
6. By The Way
7. The Red Hot Chili Peppers

But that's just my view. I also dislike Cabron and Universally Speaking, but perhaps that's just because they're not what I'm used to. And The Zephyr Song gives me a headache, but I think that's just 'cos I recall the video for it makes me dizzy.

I give it 3/5.

Yeah, I went. And I wrote my review the way in which I'm interested in reading reviews, ie song by song. Sorry if you prefer them differently...

Not direspecting you but...you'll see soon enough. This was the exact attitude I had when I first heard the Chilis around 2002. I listened to their albums in reverse order over the space of three years and now I own and love each and every one of them. By The Way is fantastic but I don't listen or play the guitar parts on it much, but I'll listen to it on me PC while I write this. I hope their next album is a slightly rockier one...this was great but...ya know. Less synthesisers, Warm Tape and Tear suck. But that's it.

Don't criticise the guy for giving a precise review, you should read mine, it's **** near a page long. Yeah

Hyde Park...didn't go to that. Went to the Manchester on one on Friday 18th, beast of a concert, they played a brand new song not on G.Hits. Chicks on Speed got booed off, Chilis came out and Ant said, 'Open ur minds to other music ya fascist bastards'. They were awesome, I was so close as well, I could smell Frusciante excitement during solos. Not nice

This was thew album that introduced a new generation including I to the Chilis. It must be given at least 2.9/5 for that! At Least! I'd give it three.

I personally think By the Way was a great album. Not the best, but nevertheless a great album. So many people have said that the Chili Peppers have "changed their sound" on By the Way which may be true but that doesn't mean it's perminate (sp?). Anyone that can't even give By the Way a fair listen has no business being a Red Hot Chili Peppers fan at all. You don't have to like it that much, but at least give it a GOOD chance. I mean I wouldn't be surprised if some people just hate the album because everyone else disses it, they don't even see for themself. That really annoys me. I'm done.

What's the big deal with Dosed? Great layering, lyrics etc. but no the best. To be honest, the Zephyr Song is my fave on this album. It kicks ***
