The bass work on this is so excellent, it's almost scary at times

love getting lost in moments of ecstasy to this

It's amazing the kind of perspective you can get from exploring a genre more, this didn't sound special to me at all when I first heard it years ago and now listening to it again it's amazingly obvious how unique this is

Ughhhh, brilliant record. I can't begin to imagine what this man could've done if he hadn't gone so soon.

I feel like this is the little child of "The Black Saint and The Sinner Lady" avant-garde, this album is clearly influenced by The Sinner from Mingus, just 1 year after this came out!

Dolphy played with Mingus for quite a little while, he learned a lot from him

Yeah he also played with Coleman and Coltrane. To me this sounds like Mingus and Coleman the most and maybe even Monk with the vibraphone. Obviously "Hat and Beard" is a reference to Monk.

He played with pretty much everyone lol (except of course Miles who really really hated his work), Dolphy was extremely sought after because he was seen as one of the most prodigious players in the whole "new jazz" thing as it was called back then so many people wanted him to play with them
