Thinking this might be the best Pedro I've heard thus far

Diggin this one a lot, the more aggressive tracks don't work quite as well as the others but it's all good. "Indian Summer" through "Magazine" is an awesome run and "Priests and Paramedics" might be my favorite Pedro song I've heard.

For me, it just misses the mark of a 5/5. Progress is okay but a bit meandering, Rehearsal is necessary for the concept of the album and I understand that but musically it isnt spectacular at all, Rapture is fantastic but it isn't as outstanding as some of the other highlights, and Rejoice closes the album well but sometimes I wonder if maybe the album would have benefited from just ending on Priests and Paramedics.
Having said that though, Options, Priests and Paramedics, Magazine, Indian Summer, Penetration, and Second Best are all among David Bazaan's best work

“Penetration” is great.

Dude, Rapture has some interesting lyrics. Anybody have a personal opinion on what it means?
I can't decide if I like this or It's hard to find a friend better. I kinda side with the softer Pedro sound right now.

I mean, I wouldn’t say “Rapture” is all that subtle lol

Well the juxtaposition between verses and chorus seem odd. Maybe just using stark comparisons?

It doesn't feel too stark between verse and chorus to me: in either case, describing sex in very big, epic, biblical terms, pointing out how serious but also incredibly mundane (cliched?) and humorous and ironic it all is. Seems to be the point of a lot of the songs.
"Wouldn't it be so wonderful if / If everything were meaningless? / But everything is so meaningful / And most everything turns to shit"

Yeah I guess that's true. I couldn't tell if he was using the biblical imagery loosely or if it was literal.

Ooo, interesting. You reckon he might be being literal?

I always thought the lyrics in rapture were very black and white. most verses depict that his character in the album understands what he is doing is wrong, both morally and biblically, but the choruses represent that he is powerless to stop doing it. The sex is too good and he gets off to the fact that what he is doing is naughty. It shows that yes he is aware he is being a shit human and risking his marriage, life (as we later find out), and soul (as christians believe), but the affair and how much he enjoys it is proof to him that deep down he does not care, and that perhaps he never did. This points to the fact that his character, and Bazan himself, is questioning the validity of the Bible's teachings as well as his own morality. Also, cheating on his wife and avoiding his family - who he clearly despises, as evidence in "Progress" - is cathartic to him. He sees it as a way to get away and be someone else, be somewhere else. Hence the line, "I hear Jesus calling me home". Which of course is alluding to when he orgasms, which feels good and more natural than when he is intimate with his wife because they have lost their passion for one another. This is a wanted escape from his mundane life, despite knowing how wrong it is. He cant stop even if he wanted to. Perhaps he sees it as his destiny as well - as he references "The Promised Land" at the end of the song. Maybe that is foreshadowing his demise at the end of the album. He knew his infidelity would be the end of him, or at least his marriage, yet he can't stop himself.
This all seems to hit harder now too, considering Bazan and his wife are currently getting a divorce.

I love diving into Bazan's lyrics. One of my favorite lyricists. Such simple and transparent lyrics that really hit home, regardless of whether or not you directly relate to them. He's just so great at getting his point across in a poignant and honest way. Especially songs like "I Never Wanted You", "Circle K", "Black Canyon", "Don't Change" and "Virginia"

I love Pedro but I honestly listen to more of his solo stuff nowadays - Blanco especially. It’s tougher around the edges but there’s a lot of charm to those records
