no one covers Alice Cooper and gets away with it
There are people awesome enough to cover Alice Cooper, but unfortunately Jon Schaffer completely lost his mind and stopped writing good music of his own.

Nightwish is not lost without Tarja. They have now become a "new" band in my eyes, and I did enjoy the album. The vocals, however, sound too diffrent to be compared with their older stuff like oceanborn.
Poor Tarja is having a hard time soloing. She should try to join another female fronted metal band and see how it goes from there.

I still want to give this album a try

As you should. This album grew on me like crazy, I used to skip this just 'cause of the quiter songs; now I actually LIKE the quiet songs!

Definitely not better than Dark Passion Play. This ain't bad but pur-lease, you know something's amiss once you're beginning to cover Alice Cooper with operatic vocals.

Yeah, that was rich. Sing For Me is y favorite song off this. Mostly, this album has soem fun. catchy tracks. Too many interludes and too many remixes though.

I liked a couple of tracks from the album. Specifically, the soundtrack-y atmospheric ones. But their appeal wore off quickly and the whole thing blurred together into a generic Goth wannabe mess. Much like the closet of a teenage Hot Topic shopper. This Message Edited On 01.31.09

Good review
Personally i found all the orchestral songs on this album (the reign, oasis, our great divide, calling grace) to be brilliant, easily the best parts of the album in my opinion. I dont really listen to the others much but My Little Pheonix, sing for me and minor heaven aren't that bad. I just wish she'd stop trying to write more nightwish songs cause its really not working for her too well. But that being said, the orchestral songs i mentioned before come into the category of some of the best songs i own. If i was making an epicly tragic movie (which i'm not), i'd definately get her to compose for it.

"My Winter Storm" brings back much of what I've been missing, even from the new Nightwish. Tarja's powerful voice is showcased throughout, and deservedly so; there's no mistaking that the Queen's voice is the focus and the reason for it.
The music itself is evocative of "Once" and "Century Child", albeit with less metal emphasis. Her band is actually quite good; tracks like "Lost Northern Star" and "Damned and Divine" can stand up against anything that Nightwish has done. My favorite track has to be "Sing for Me"; it sounds like a lost track from "Once".

^every song you mentioned are just badly executed Nightwish copies with no balls or substance
and Nightwish didn't really have balls in the first place

Wow so much digging here! nah it is a great effort... not excellent but great. Ok guitars can improve (no one started perfect, give the Lady a chance). Lyrics are nice (except the Boy and the Ghost) and the vocals superb. I really like the cover of Poison and I don't see why not but I respect your opinions. The too many versions of I walk alone are useless and boring. She surely gained my support and I expect more from Mrs Turunen.
