This albums alright. It's good driving music and I really love Paris, Tokyo. Pretty much all the songs are catchy and easy to listen to. I don't think this is a life changing album or anything spectacular like all the hype is leading it to be.
Then again, I only listen to a handful of hip-hop.

The review was exceedingly well written, but my opinion differs from yours radically.
Maybe as a self-proclaimed hip hop head, I'm inclined to like this CD more because it exists in spite of mainstream rap, which is filled with overblown rhetoric about guns, money, and easy women. In rap, the beat really carries the vocals, which would collapse without that overpronounced foundation.
Indeed, your review and many of the comments mentioned the understated production as a detriment. In Lupe's songs, the beat is more of a vessel for the lyrics, which are the true gems. If the beats were as overwrought as in a generic rap album, it'd be distracting from the highlight of his music; it'd be like a crazy drum fill in the middle of a beautiful guitar solo.
I find it amusing that you contrast the subject matter of this album with Food and Liquor, as if they were so different. This album lacks the raw feel that Food and Liquor touts, but has more intricate lyrics that require some serious scrutiny to penetrate, and a much more streamlined sound. Aside from the conceptual shenanigans, that's the only real difference between the two. You've got your egotistical bragadoccio with Superstar, Hi-Definition, and Go Go..., which corresponds to I Gotcha and Pressure. You've got your love songs in Paris Tokyo and Go Baby, just like on Sunshine. You've got the examination of the death of hip hop on Dumb It Down, as well as most of the concept tracks, which deal with the images rap glorifies. Daydreamin', and Real, to an extent, echo this sentiment. Little Weapon and American Terrorist put political travesty in the spotlight. And the list goes on. The ideas are all similar, just presented in a different way.
Personally, I found Go Go Gadget Flow to be a little generic, Paris Tokyo to be dull, and I felt that Hello/Goodbye just crashed completely. Hi Definition didn't really stand out in my mind either. Oddly, most of these songs are the ones you list as highlights. It's probably just a difference of perspective, but you seem to prefer the more vapid, flashy pop songs to the introspective masterpieces crafted in the rest of the album.

I actually completely agree with you. I can't stand mainstream rap but I find myself enjoying this album.

The other one just kinda came out of nowhere. Much more experimental.
