Chill out guys, the review is solid. I like your descriptions and your views on the themes, I just think you need to describe the actual music a bit more.

I'm not sure what review you are reading, but poor reasoning does not constitute a solid review, regardless of how his writing may be perfectly fine. It takes more than decent writing to make a review good.

I do like how you revolved your review around the literary aspect of the album and yet in no other way analyzed any of the lyrical content other than explaining that it has a recurring motif.

Wait. I get it! This is a concept review!

No, but in seriousness I'm not going to echo what's already been said but this is harsh.

Jeez people, this debate is more intense than the album itself. In the end I think this is all going to boil down to everyone having different opinions of what a concept album is. Give the guy a break. We get it, Thrice is your favorite band and you don't like reading bad things about them, congratulations. Give it a rest.

I read the review and I read all of the comments, and I just think you based your score too much on the fact that the "concept" failed to meet your expectations. Ok, that's enough to take some points away, but then it's time to move on and look at the content itself, and when you write:

With all that being said about the nature of the album itself, the songs by themselves are not that bad. They certainly aren’t the best songs I’ve ever heard, but the songs are decent for what they are.
That line, plus a failed "concept" doesn't equal a 2 in my opinion.

And as far as Thrice go, I'm a casual fan of them at best... so don't take this as biased.

well, what should the fire songs sound like?

if you had to personify fire, most people wold agree it would be aggressive, towering and devastating.

and what should the water songs sound like?

when I think water, i think deep, lush, and tranquil.

sounds to me like your expectations were way off.

This is the last comment I'm going to address. Sure thats a typical expectation about fire, but is that all fire is? There are many ways you can describe fire. Fire can be destructive, but it can also be beautiful or mysterious. In literature and poetry its often a metaphor for love or passion. You can do the same thing with water: water can be calm and smooth, but it can also be violent, or sad, or cleansing. Approaching an element like fire or water from a single angle when there are many to explore is artistically shallow. I feel that if you're going to try to be profound with a "concept album" (they called it that, not me), you need to go all the way. I didn't think they did.

Ok, last comment for real: I got that, I didn't think I needed to include too much about the other elements of the album because I thought it had already been said, but I realize now based on peoples' reactions that it needs to be completed to fully appreciate the rating. This is why I'm going to add to it within the next couple of days. This Message Edited On 12.04.07

camdizzle:

did you even listen to this album?

yeah, fire has songs about destruction and aggression, but there are also motifs

of cleansing, new beginnings, and even love.

"The Messenger" says "kiss the coals".

Its a purging, cleansing element.

"The Arsonist" is all about using fire to wash away the old and start something

new, something better.

"Open Water" explains the mystery and threat the ocean possesses. ("the open

water is an awful thing... the open water is my only fear... terrible depth... etc.")

and if you want Water to be cleansing, just listen to "Lost Continent".

Kensrue laments some of the failings of man, and says "we'll soon be swallowed

by the sea" as in to wipe the smudge of humanity and its evils from this earth.

and the Water sonnet is all about the power of the sea, its ability to bury the men

that sail it with their futile pride.

"No one masters me" Dustin writes.

that is where i see some genius to this album:

the instrumentation acts to explain certain attributes of the element, and the

vocals shed light on others.

i suggest you really LISTEN to this album and READ the lyrics. This Message Edited On 12.04.07This Message Edited On 12.05.07

I agree.

Personally, I don't see how one would capture EVERYTHING an element could be described as in 6 songs. That just seems retarded to expect that they will address endless things that an element COULD be described as. I feel they did a wonderful job in expressing different views as to what these two elements could be described as and in a very atmospheric way as well. I honestly think you MUST have been trying to find something wrong with this album. This Message Edited On 12.04.07

Yeah those revisions definitely helped. Solid review. You supported your statments pretty well, regardless of how many people disagreed with them. I know its tough fending off all of those Thrice fanboys, seems like you did a pretty good job though.

I totally disagree with your rating but gave you a positive vote. I don't think it needs to be said that that takes skills on your behalf.

Just for fun I went and listened to this album the whole way through, and a weak concept album is a pretty good description. Plus, I felt like I'd heard all the music before.

I felt the same way, but not like music Thrice had made. More a cobbling of other stuff that melded.

This review is much better from when I last read it.

I think Thrice is way over-rated but this isn't a 2 more like 3-4 with reviewer tilt.
