There is never a concrete best album for Meshuggah. I go one place and they say obZen, I check somewhere else and they say DEI, I look on a list where they're deciding which one the list maker should get and they say Chaosphere is best; here I guess I is winning. I'm so confused.

Exactly, you're approaching it in a way that doesn't fit the music.
It's supposed to be somewhat ambient with post-metal traits (the buildup in Mind's Mirrors is goosebump-inducing). I get hypnotized listening to the droning guitars in ridiculous time signatures, or I try to follow along with the drum pattern which is a major challenge. Until it clicks, it should sound like endlessly boring chugging, which it did for me for about a month.

I like Meshuggah (mostly the Nothing and I "era"), but most of this album irked me. The 2001: A Space Odyssey obilisk-like crooning noise on half the tracks just put me off.
And finding out Haake used a drum machine also put me off.
But I certainly believe the reviewer when he said this album is like climbing Mt Everest.
At least obZen came next.

He used a drum machine on one album. And it still sounds awesome.

Yar, I know it was used on just C33.
Can't believe I said "put me off" twice in a row like that, too.
