At one time Mozart was pop, jazz was pop, Elvis was pop, The Beatles were pop, even friggin' Metallica (Nothing Else Matters)...
Nowadays it's associated with catchy (mostly female) vocals and a dance beat, but that won't last (I hope...). In that sense, it's not a single genre as the term references a constantly evolving musical taste of the masses.
