Yeah, even if you find it boring, there's nothing average about this album. Nothing poor about it either. I couldn't see this deserving anything less than a 3 (though maybe just barely for some). Even back when I didn't care for Opeth I had this and their other albums as a 3 at least. Even as I frowned at their meanderings, I couldn't say this wasn't good. After I heard Still Life, Opeth's music made a lot more sense to me.

I'm not saying its bad in any way they are good musicians and I love the vocalists voice, his era in bloodbath was awesome, but I just find this to be boring I can't explain why it just is for me.

^^^^^You guys make some good points, I can't disagree with anything you said. In the end, it comes down to how the music makes you feel. I'm in a different position because this was the first Opeth album I ever heard. Most of it anyway. Then it was blackwater, then orchid, then morningrise, then damnation, then still life...see I'm all over the place with them, so most of it sounds pretty fresh to me. But I can totally see how someone who's been following them since Orchid might be tapping their fingers to this going "Okay, you guys are nice, I know this already, show me something...else" lol. This is the first opeth I ever heard too. Other then this I've heard Blakcwater Park that i thought was undeserving of all the hype it got.

I didn't even like these guys at first, so hype was certainly not a factor for me. If anything it worked against me liking these guys. Still Life blew me away though, and I've enjoyed Opeth ever since.

When I first started listening to Opeth, I shared some of these opinions. Now that I've listened to every song they have ever written at least 50 times...I would have to disagree with this review. I know these songs like the back of my hand, and they actually seem quite diverse from their other work to me.
