well he still writes some good acoustic tunes (oh sister, what makes a man, the grand optimist, northern wind, body in a box), and the lyrics on this album were a tad too one dimensional at times

I don't understand the mediocre response to this album. This is one of the purest forms of musical emotion I've ever heard. The lyrics. The melodies. All are as close to perfection for this us genre as can be found. One of my all-time favorite albums.
