Everyone gives too much credit to Hellhammer. In my opinion, Nick Barker is better. He did a better job on the albums than Hellhammer did on this one. I saw Dimmu live, and Hellhammer did a solo for about a minute and a half. It was ok. Unearth, in the contrary to what people say how crazy their shows are, had the calmest crowd. You could count the people headbanging to them, and no one pitting.

Hellhammer is way better than Barker.
Neither stand close to George Kollias tho (even tho the music is different), that man is a machine. Man thing...

OMG I disagree with your review..

I wanted to like this. Sadly, I'm left with the bitter taste of disappointment. Let me see: the riffs are forgettable; Vortex should go back to Borknagar; Shagrath sounds constipated; Hellhammer's drumming is boring as heck and the sound is way too clean.
Poor as hell album? You got that right.

I can't understand how people can take Dimmu Borgir seriously. After Stormblast, wich I think is nice, maybe very nice, everything they did was weaker and weaker. This album bores me.

I agree, not only that - but Death Cult Armageddon had a much better drum mix. In Sorte Diaboli is good, but is definately not up to their standards.
As far as all the Dimmu Borgir ripping is concerned - it's very popular to hate the popular band sometimes isn't it?

Excellent album. Can“t stop listening to it since I first heard it last week. This record is what got me into the band. They provide a great balance between heavy and melodic riffs. Great review by the way.

The drumming on this album is probably Hellhammer's worst performance to date.
Try the new Mayhem album. That album is just garbling garbage and his drumming was repulsive on it.

The drumming on this album is probably Hellhammer's worst performance to date. You obviously haven't heard his drumming on the last two The Kovenant CD's ;)Try the new Mayhem album. That album is just garbling garbage and his drumming was repulsive on it. That is a true and accurate statement.

I actually really liked the drumming in this, and found The Serpentine Offering to be a on high replay lately. i think this was a pretty good release, and kind of want to check into their earlier albums seeing as many people think Stormblast is a better album than this.

If you're going to get Stormblast then you might as well get the re-recorded version, unless you absolutely love shitty productions (in which case Dimmu isn't probably the band to be listening to).

Yeah, not only does the new version sound much better but it has the same drummer as "In Sorte Diaboli" so if you like him then there's another chance to hear him play.

Nice review and album. I agree with The Chosen Legacy being the favouriste song. Not many can argue with those drums. Many would be confused enough to think it was a drum machine.
I also like The Serpentine Offering quite a bit.
Decent album, considering the reduced keyboard sections.

How can you give this a 1? I can understand a 1.5 or a 2, but not a 1. It's serious not even close to being a 1.

Not bad, but it gets really boring. If it was about 30 minutes it would be better. Pretty much all of the songs sound the same. Its good if you want to get into the band though because its their most "mainstream" album.
