No. It's just completely false.
The bass playing is ridiculously prevalent in the mix because of the lack of a second guitar. Ballou is not riffing alot so he the bassist has to fill in his "shredding".
Koller is probably one of the most inventive drummers out right now. He is in no way "playing the same beat" over and over again.
The production is crystal clear analog recording and probably some of the best I've heard.
Bannon is easy to dislike so I understand that.

I said variations, as in fills. He changes tempo well, but he fails to impress when he is given that split second to go off on his own, like (please excuse my fanboyism) Dave Lombardo or the drummer from Nile (I forget his name).
Either way, I'm done argueing. I see where you're coming from Pixies, but I think you're just ranting just to, well, rant. I'm going to bed.

Looks like a strong case for me NOT do my full review. Daring, this fellow is, and I like this review better than Iai's. It actually bothers to back up its opinions, which almost immediately puts it ahead of Iai's review.

I love it how in Converge threads opinions can be wrong.

I personally love Bannon's vocals. It fits the music perfectly regardless of whether I understand him or not. But I have to say that while this review has some validity in opinion, you ground your reasoning that the music is too violent, too directionless, too chaotic. Nothing can be too chaotic, chaos is chaos there is no such thing as a level of 'chaos' where it sounds okay but not too bad. So by saying that, most of your arguments are redundant in fact but fine for opinion. For an analogy for what I'm trying to say is that it's like saying that a pot of water is 'too boiling', or the temperature outside is 'too freezing'. You base your whole review on the fact that 'No Heroes' is too directionless, incoherent etc, and that is pretty much exactly what the definition of chaos is and Converge base their art on this notion.

Yes I know but the review is wholly based on that and his reasoning is a bit redundant by saying that it is too chaotic. Has soh tried listening to "Jane Doe" yet?

I still think he'd like "Petitioning..." too, since he's a slayer fan.

Album Rating: 4.5
Yeah, but if he didn't like the production for this one, I doubt he'll like the production for Petitioning.

Yeah, but musically I think it'd be more up his alley. It's got a lot more of the thrash.

Nah, this is their thrashiest.

I find Petitioning has the most blatant thrash in it, riff wise, but I'd also be inclined to agree with you. I'm confusing myself, I should go to sleep.

Whoa, I never said this was "too violent". TBH, I don't really view this as violent, as violence in music (to me) is more based on the lyrics (like, the vocalist shouting stuff along the lines of "I will f*cking gut you and worship Satan blah blah blah). I don't have a problem with this album being aggressive, it's just the song structure that bothers me.
Nothing can be too chaotic, chaos is chaos there is no such thing as a level of 'chaos' where it sounds okay but not too bad
I'll have to disagree. Theory in Practice, a tech death metal band, seems to play all over the place, but they always seem as one. On the verses to the "Dehumanized", it took me a few listens to love it because it was hard to follow. They play chaotic, but they match each other. Converge doesn't seem to do this (well, at least to me).
EDIT:
So, I took the time to listen to the first two tracks on "Jane Doe". I really don't like the vocals, but this just seems so much more coordinated and thought-out than "No Heroes". It's solid. This Message Edited On 03.14.07

A dam fine review SOH. You described everything I think about this album perfectly. Im really surprised Converge fans have been receptive to this review (except for one who I will not mention, just read pages 1 and 2). When I saw this album on the front page of the metal section this morning with a rating of 2, I honestly thought a war was brewing on Sputnik. Votes!

good review, haven't heard this album, probably won't as I hate metalcore ugh
I wouldn't call that a huge difference; if something is uncontrollable then it's by definition unpredictable.
Nope, you are wrong. Control and predictability are not really related. You can predict the coming of a hurricane but can't control it's arrival. You can control a viral infection but can't predict when it will appear in a body, or when will a certain body will be infected by it.

In Nile's case it's more like the whole song.
