Piece of Mind, Brave New World, or Seventh Son of a Seventh Son.

definetly either piece of mind or somewhere in time. If you like this album alot you'd probably like piece of mind better.

I don't understand this, really. The title track is pretty horrible, I really don't get the appeal of lyrics which are just evil. The song sounds evil, and in a bad way. The 4 tracks you mention as being dull- agreed. The first two songs are pretty good, the last one is meh.

Number Of The Beast is really good, but I still don't see the appeal in the 'death metal' lyrics. Iron Maiden are quite a bit overrated, I think but that doesn't mean they're BAD, I just don't really like this album and parts of others.

I don't think I've ever really found an Iron Maiden song evil sounding.

Well, maybe it's just me, but Powerslave sounds evil (although I'm using 'evil' to mean several different things at once, which I can't describe otherwise, you see?) to my ears... I'll probably like it in a couple of years time, but I have to say, I doubt I'll ever be too keen on this album.

Powerslave doesn't sound evil... sure the riffs are minor key probably but...

I agree with Mike.

So me being an aspiring Egyptologist I am going to have to smack you pretty hard for this fail of a statement.

Ummmm... Well, I was always gonna get attacked for saying bad about Iron Maiden. Look, I don't understand this:

Tell me why I had to be a powerslave
I dont wanna die, Im a god, why cant I live on?
When the life giver dies, all around is laid to waste.
And in my last hour,
Im a slave to the power of death.

I don't see any appeal in lyrics like that. Nothing wrong with sad/depressing lyrics, or riffs, but I think that is just... too much. It's difficult to describe, really, but I can't get into it, despite the fact I've tried many many times. I respect them for their ability and all, but I just don't like what they come out with in the end.

You are taking it the wrong way. It is dealing with a Pharaoh who is about to die even in the afterlife but is confused because he since he is the Pharaoh, he shouldn't die. (Ancient Egyptian Pharaoh's were the equivalent of gods on earth. They would be immortal even after they die. The afterlife was better than life on earth for the Egyptians).

That's interesting, actually... Well, I'll have another listen. It won't really excuse the 4 tracks which are pure filler in my mind, but I might like Powerslave itself a bit better.

Don't take them so seriously either.

lol I don't. I was just explaning what they mean. I don't listen to the song for the lyrics, it's the music that makes the song so great.

I just had another listen. I actually do quite like it, but I still can't say that I find it mind-blowing, although some of their songs certainly are. Hallowed Be Thy Name, obviously, is mind-blowing- This album is just pretty good, to my ears at least.

Wow, finally someone who agrees with me. I’ve always been a huge Maiden fan but I’ve always found this album to be somewhat inconsistent. Aces High, Two Minutes to Midnight and The Rime of the Ancient Mariner are all classics but as a whole I just don’t understand why it’s ranked up there with Seventh Son and Number of the Beast so often.

Anyways it may be the weakest eighties album of theirs but it’s still great nonetheless so 3.5 for me.
