I like this album, but I like the "Operation: Livecrime" version of it better because the sound is heavier and the production is better.

Whoa whoa whoa, I know this is very outdated but I keep being taken back by people who keep bashing on punk. Intransit you may or may not end up reading this but Id just like to say that the definition of "good" is very much up to interpretation. For the most part I agreed with what you were saying, however, now I feel as though you have attacked a whole other section of music because you don't understand classic punk apparently. I guess I'll leave it at that since I doubt you will get this.

I've reduced the rating half a point to 3.5, though I haven't changed much of the review, but I think it still fits the rating.

I never loved this, but it seems to grow old and boring with time. hm, it might seem that I'm a bit indetermined about this one - and well, I am. but I think that's it now. This Message Edited On 05.02.08

This album is an absolute monster and should be listened to back to back with Metallica's ...And Justice For All. Both albums were toured together for a while. And, both of them are really way too good to have come out of the fluffy, poppy, corny-ass 1980's. I give both a big '5'. You don't get any better than this.

I'm getting this through the post in a few days, after hearing some of the songs played live on a radio show, it interested me, I've been getting into a lot of Prog Metal & Prog Rock lately, & my venture further into this genre continues

This is one of my favorite albums, but it is definitely not for everyone. Queensryche is definitely a "love em or hate em" type band; Mindcrime embodies everything that is mighty (and foolish) about them.

The band's Pink Floyd obsession really shows here; a concept album that is (let's face it) about someone losing their sanity? Creepy atmospherics and paranoid lyrics? Oh yeah, Tate DEFINITELY grew up listening to Floyd.

5/5 for me though; I'm a writer, and this album launched a thousand stories. The thing that always made this album shine for me was the intensity of it; you can tell that someone (definitely Tate but probably the whole band) really, truly CARED about making it. Also, their willingness to be different (the album was almost not released because record execs believed a rock opera wouldn't sell, the band insisted) gives them high marks in my book.

Some have commented on the song structure being similar; I believe that was purposeful. If you listen to actual opera, melodies and song structures are often re-used to give a sense of continuity. Maybe the Ryche overdid it, but it comes across as a true "rock opera" where a lot of so-called "concept albums" don't. The song medley at the end of "Eyes of a Stranger" is a really nice touch as well.

For me Mindcrime is a masterpiece. I don't think I'll ever get sick of it.

there's a big difference between reprising melodies and certain movements and almost all songs on an album having the same structure.

and your statement reads like concept albums have to be rock operas to be really great, which is bullshit. also I don't really think the love em or hate em thingy is true - I for once do really like this album but by no means adore it.

anyway, I haven't listened to it in ages now, need to put it on again soon.
