I believe that this album is a severely underrated alternative hip hop classic. The deeper meaning behind every line that Lupe Fiasco applies with sheer genius goes unnoticed to the naked eye, and as a result the album is underrated. To most, it just appears as a bland "I made it" rap album with catchy hooks and solid presentation and delivery.

Why was this so much better than his newer releases?

Because Lasers was in fact Atlantic Record's album not Lupe's, it was an enormous amount of corporate bullshit, music lowered to the lowest common denominator in order to please the masses, while this album is actually what Lupe wanted to do.
Fuck Atlantic Records

Damn this is really good.
The beat on the Outro track is fucking sick, and totally wasted on a 12 minute shout out exercise.
Kinda agree with this. But I don't mind the track as a shout out fest as much.

"and he's got what the critics are always saying hip-hop lacks these days - a message"
what exactly is that message? I don't think he has a message

Some of the lines in I Gotcha still gets me every time. Lupe shows why he is great with words, irony and poetry here.

This album rules.
Lupe's the one rapper I enjoy listening to (well the only rapper I know)---a mix of his delivery and lyrics, probably.
