When I listen to their newer stuff I tend to forget how brutal and awesome their first album actually is.

Very nicely put Voivod. The last issue of Metalhammer talked about how they reshaped the world with their immense masterpiece 'Crack The Skye'. I was like lolwut? Turns out that the metalhammer readers voted Crack The Skye as the best metal album of 2009... Still like their previous work more.

Does anybody have any recs similar to this ? (I'm not very knowledgeable about Metal so "obvious" recs can work)

My favorite Mastodon cd by far. I wish they continued this rougher sound with their discography altogether. *LARGE SIGH* this album cover has so much meaning to it......

The Tyrannosaurus Rex and Lex in Jurassic Park... anyone else get this? Edit: 3rd

Their only work I enjoy, this is. Crack the Skye was decent, but these guys can't write long songs.

this and Levianthan both rule
Tupik, if you're still looking for recs, check out some mid 90s Entombed, Crowbar, Kylesa, Baroness or Down. even something like Kvelertak is vaguely along these lines.
