Painkiller is by whom? I'm one of these metal noobs you have spoken about.

Judas Priest. Probably the most stereotypical metal album possible.
I can 100% see why someone doesn't like it though

"why did no one tell me this was good"

This is literally the exact same thing I said when I heard Ziggy Stardust.

"Probably the most stereotypical metal album possible."

In the absolute best possible way.

The very beginning of the title track of Painkiller is that quintessential metal sound. When I first heard it it clicked in my head

Sad Wings of Destiny might be a better place to start metal with

Painkiller (album, though the song could probably apply too) is kinda metal 101 for me really, it just nails all the "basic" metal conventions (vocals with tons of conviction, pounding and powerful drums, aggressive memorable and loud guitar riffs, wailing shredding solos, rhythms and tempos ranging from energetic and upbeat to marching/galloping to slow and crushing) so so well.

No. Sad Wings is better imo, but Painkiller is much easier to get into.

idk I always go for metal that is closest in relation to blues-rock because that is usually the most accessible.

Otherwise you can just go with early Maiden

I'd say maiden is probably the best band to start with to get into metal

I guess, but you'd need to give it a try to actually understand your taste

i meant the taste before trying to get into metal. i wouldn't rec maiden to a person whose fave genre is ambient

During grad school, I listened to Aha and Depeche Mode. Then I heard Reign in Blood and became a metalhead in 5 minutes.

Maiden is maybe a good entry if you're some kind of ***** *****.

What about Metallica as an entry point? They have popular songs that everyone knows that could be used as gateways to discovering other metal.

I'm not really into metal at all. I enjoy Megadeth and keep up with them for whatever reason though
