Yeah, I didn't want to drop in out of nowhere with a TL;DR post either, but I think everyone knows how obsessive Tool fans are - though hopefully it didn't come off as fanboying either, after all I gave the album a 3.5, so I definitely don't think it's their strongest. And I can't blame anyone who finds it boring, I'm just saying it might not be time to write them off just yet.



But if it takes another 13 years for the next album, or if it's as much of a slow-burner as this one, it'll be a lot harder to go to bat for them. Like I said though, I think this is just what happens when you're out of the game for as long as they were, you have to flex the creative muscles a bit before you're really back at full potential. Here's hoping they get there, and people still give them a chance after a relatively underwhelming comeback.



(Though on a final note, the album's definitely grown on me, and I don't think that's just confirmation bias, I think it's a genuine late-bloomer album that you have to take a while to wrap your head around. Of course no one's obligated to do that, and again, you can't blame anyone for deciding it's not worth their time. But I think there's more to it than meets the ear, even after two or three listens.)
