"Not addressing this at anyone here but I feel like a lot of the band's detractors, those who say that they're all doom and gloom, are really missing that side of them. IAETF's relative lack of humor/self-parody is a big part of what holds it back from true greatness imo."
This is a good point though - I don't think putting it in terms of outright self-parody is that accurate to many National songs, but I totally agree with what this touches on (and IAETF's lack of humour ironically takes it into the realm of inadvertent self-parody unironic snooze central F)

Nothing can top Al The Wine for that

Yeah it's definitely not full self-parody, the main point is that they're very aware of what they're doing.

I think Boney nailed it. I find their doom and gloom is captured through a lens of neutral introspection at worst, and acknowledged through the motif of happy people exploring the essential lows that make life's highs worth savoring at their brightest. Idk, I find them a long toss from being actually depressing.

I just like my National lyrics a little more abstract I guess, a little more “dancing on a table with your dick in your hand” or “my female bodyguard will show you her gun which is a revolver if you want her to” instead of “I’m sad”

If you want more abstract, I hope your reflection slaps you in your dumb corporeal face next time you see it

always thought the lyrics to Sorrow were pretty interesting. 'Sorrow's the girl inside my cake,' 'Sorrow, they put me on the pill,' 'it's in my honey, it's in my milk'

i actually agree that the lyrics of sorrow felt a little too on-the-nose national for me. but i also haven't listened in ages so let's fire it up and see

ok i will say that the subtle background vocal harmony in the chorus of sorrow ("don't leave my hyper heart alONE") is super awesome

the harmonies are one of the songs redeeming qualities for sure

I like the national but they are very the national arent they

Wouldn't be very nationalistic to go changing their sound all willy-nilly
They didn't name themselves the Ex-Pats
|
| |
God damn, that's a good point - 5!
I do think the national might be the national more than other artists are themselves - maybe not morissey.
