ya the older I get the more I think dm is prob my favorite metal. Like said it does have a shit load of variety, and tbh I think prog death is the only kind of prog music that I fuck with. I’m fine with 13 minute songs with insane structure that bitch just needs to have riffz.
Death > Black > Grind > sludge > eh the rest > groove

Bm has been my fav for a very long time and always will be but I've been listening to more dm over the past couple years. I love them both.

Always surprised when I see black takes up so much of my pie chart because I’m so fuckin picky when it comes to black metal. Death metal tho, I can get down with pretty much all of it as long as it isn’t trash ofc.
Except slam, I just can’t man it all sounds like my fuckin garbage disposal

I've been getting into slam as of the past few months actually lol. Theres a lot of shit but when its mixed with more traditional brutal dm and isn't all breakdowns it can actually be good stuff lol.

DM has the highest quantity of solid shit in all probability, it comes in so many forms and peaks damn high as well
Personally post / atmo sludge peaks the highest of all the metals, but (as is well-documented by now) there's seemingly a limited amount of top-shelf stuff
Black is weird because I'm not big into first-wave and / or super lo-fi BM, yet there's some incredible albums when you dig into its wider sphere of influence. Then there's the dissonant or experimental / avant realm, which can be amazing
The rest are several notches below the above. Prog is v much a love / hate thing, mostly hate due to the quantity of utter nonsense, but it also peaks high

curious what you all like about about dm specifically. for me its too guitar/technicality focused and leaves little room for the sound/songwriting departments and feels very one note. there are of course exceptions like this and unquestionable presence and cynic

The blast beats, riffs, vocals and take no prisoners pummelling delivery of the entire package.
Incredibly refreshing in a vanilla world.

I mean yeah there’s a lot of trash dm like what you describe but pretty much what zak said.
Listen to Horrendous

I wouldn't exactly say there is "a lot of trash" dm. There is a fair amount of less original/more derivative stuff now but there is actually a good amount of dm that is pretty well-done.

I throw in way too much deathcore when I describe it like that. Truly a genre of 99% dogshit

Well I never really got into deathcore so I guess I can't speak on that
