The bass during the verses of 'Urantia'; God damn. One of the best songs on the album for sure.

Verses are pretty decent, the chorus is just weak

30 plays deep into ohms according to lastfm and its comfortably my favorite post wrist. diamond eyes and koi are pretty spotty to me so i really appreciate how consistent the new one is all the way through even if its not as hooky

"And the last 40 seconds of This Link Is Dead really doesn't overshadow how much harder Diamond Eyes goes on the whole. Not saying Diamond Eyes is better because it's more aggressive, but this is far tamer than DE so that assertion is very strange to me."

Royal and Cmnd/Ctrl are literally the only two truly heavy songs on Diamond Eyes. Royal is on par with Genesis as far as heaviness goes (those last 30 seconds of Royal do give it a slight edge tho) and between TLID and Cmnd/Ctrl I'd say TLID goes harder so I don't know how you arrived at the conclusion that DE is far more aggressive. In fact DE has more soft "ballad-like" songs (Beauty School, 975-Evil, This place is death) than this one.

I guess Rocket Skates and Prince don't exist.

Genesis rly doesn't go that hard, seems very odd to me to classify Ohms as "their most aggressive album since White Pony" when you have 1 song that goes in lmao.

urantia might be my least favourite on the album

it starts with a fucking banger of a riff and then turns into a snoozefest

Agreed, there's nothing particularly interesting about it. I don't even mind it it's just that I saw reviewers and other people hyping it up as one of the best.

yeah honestly there was a lot of hype about this being their “heaviest” album in years, when it’s not any heavier than kny or diamond eyes

people compared this link is dead to when girls telephone boys but i would suggest giving the end of that song another listen, doesn’t even compare

Okay I'm glad someone else is on the same page as me, I was starting to think I was losing my mind. The album really isn't that heavy at all, which I'm totally fine with, I was just confused about people praising it for it's heaviness and intensity.

it’s heavier than gore for sure, and also a better album

imo it doesn’t have the songwriting chops of diamond eyes or the successful experimentation of koi no yokan

but it sits nicely at the tail end of their catalogue

Agreed. Songwriting isn't as good as the two you mentioned but the album is still fun. Hard not to counter the hype a bit tho ya know?

Nobody is claiming this is an incredibly heavy album or even their heaviest in years. The WGTB comparison was done by professional reviewers, after which fans quickly dispelled those comparisons as kind of inaccurate. Other than 1 or 2 people I haven't seen anyone praise this for its heaviness per say, more for the energy, intensity, rhythm and tempo which are definitely a cut above KNY and DE for the most part.

"imo it doesn’t have the songwriting chops of diamond eyes"

which DE songwriting chops lmao

I mean I like DE but it's easily the most simple and one-note album Deftones have done

yeah idk how were measuring "songwriting" here but diamond eyes is one of their least interesting albums structurally. ohms is a lot more adventurous and interesting

this thread is such a classic deftones thread

everyone has completely different ideas of which albums are better written or heavier or more interesting and then tries to use past albums as frames of reference
