I think the alternate version of Terrible Love they released on the expanded edition is better than anything on here other than maybe England or Vanderlyle

Nice to see someone else loving Little Faith as much as I do
The alternate version of Terrible Love is probably my favorite National song

I’ve written my manifesto in favor of the Terrible Love album version many a time but I def prefer that one in the context of the album at the very least. See page 280.

Sorrow, Terrible Love and Conversation 16 are my top 3 off this.

I see your point about Terrible Love working well in the context of the album Boney. I think they overdid the muddiness just slightly though.

But the fact that a much less muddy version exists definitely suggests it was an intentional artistic choice, as you said

Going on record to say that "Little Faith" is my least favorite here, not "Sorrow"

"Undoubtedly the weakest of the big three"
happy someone is with me on this!
although i actually found this to be the most accessible of the bunch back when it came out. it helped me get into the national and i appreciate that, but it just kinda sounds like sparknotes national to me now. still good tho

like 'sorrow,' 'lemonworld,' 'anyone's ghost,' 'runaway,' and perhaps even 'vanderlyle' always sounded like pretty basic tier 3 national cuts for me. like what someone would write if they were attempting to make a Typical National Song
but i can still enjoy those songs and this album! it was very immediate for me but i still feel like it lacks the intricacies & levels of much of their other work. but clearly many people whose taste i love think differently, and i am happy that they find a little more pizzazz here than i do

Lemonworld is probably my favourite here

I agree with most of Rom's points but yeah Lemonworld is the best thing here, it's perfect
if I could add to the hot take pile further - Bloodbuzz Ohio is kinda really boring and I never understood the acclaim it gets

I guess I can kind of agree with Romulus, I admit this was my first National so I have nostalgia goggles for that reason. It’s perfect in every way as far as I’m concerned.

The pleasures of this one, like TWFM after it, have always felt very intimate and subdued. Alligator was the first National album I ever heard and it was immediate for me. Same with Boxer. This and TWFM took much more time to really, truly grow on me. Ostensibly they seem somewhat homogenous, maybe, but that’s only because they are both extremely subtle in comparison, but every bit as complex and layered imo.
