Frayed Ends of Sanity might be my straight up favorite tallica song and I’ll never forgive these old pieces of shit for closing with Enter Sandman and then doing literal cock and ball torture by playing the fucking intro riff for my favorite song and then saying goodnight.
Fuck them for that, fuck them hard

Across the board it’s James’ finest album. In my head, and going off of the bass boosted remaster and obv the Justice for Jason bootleg, the dude did what he could. He’s a great bassist but god, just fucking imagine what this record sounds like with Cliff.
I don’t know every piece of Metallica lore, maybe somebody more intimately familiar with the band’s history can tell me some bullshit like “this album would not exist if Cliff had lived” or something, I’m just imagining more complex parts and maybe even further extended instrumental passages when you have a literal bass prodigy instead of Jason… who, again, is a great fuckin bassist. I’ll put it this way, he’s my second favorite bassist of the classic thrash bands. James, Lars, and Kirk really don’t know how fucking lucky they were to have such good players. But I guess when you’re on top of the world like they were, you just get the best of the best. Robert is also fucking great but his best moments aren’t even on Metallica albums
What are the cliff (hah) notes on how Jason wound up in the band anyways? I know I can look it up but fuck that, it’s getting late and I want my sputnik story time

What’s another 5?
Operation: Mindcrime. I think 1988 might’ve actually been the best year for metal ever, certainly mainstream metal. What maiden album came out that year?

"maybe somebody more intimately familiar with the band’s history can tell me some bullshit like “this album would not exist if Cliff had lived” or something"
hate when people start getting existential about shit that will never happen, like I get the sentiment but I guess I'm kind of a nihilist

nah it's an interesting hypothetical. gets your mind thinking. but anyway it's a common misconception that cliff would've kept them on a metal path. if anything he was the one in the band least inspired by metal. he listened to a lot of pop and other non-metal genres mainly. he would've been completely fine with load/reload and maybe would've pushed to experiment more and probably stray even further from metal.

Yeah I’m not usually either Tayne, but if we’re being honest with ourselves, that is probably the single most interesting “what if?” in the history of metal.
I refuse to believe he would’ve allowed them to come out with some of the trash we see on Load/Reload, so I choose to believe that Brat Summer was originally scheduled for ‘88 until Cliff’s untimely demise.
