Well, this is overwhelming. It's late at night over here so I'm definitely not in the right state of mind to process this but man, this is just classic Deftones through and through. Instrumentally, this could well be the best thing they've ever done. Chino's melodies got a little buried for me on first listen, admittedly, but the musicianship is insanely good. The back half of Error in particular and my goodness, the bass on Spell Of Mathmatics. Fantastic return to form. And the production just shines.

first impression is pretty good but far from a classic or anything
Urantia, Pompeji and This Link is Dead easy standouts for me

Basically the new album is an ammalgamation of Gore and Koi No Yokan with a little bit of self titled (This Link is Dead mostly). Both Headless and Error could easily fit Koi No Yokan. I keep saying this but Ceremony and Pompeji are 100% Gore songs just done better.
I think Urantia and Radiant City are kind of new to them.

Ok after listening through Ohms for the first time I can confirm:
- It shits all over Gore
- It’s my AOTY for 2020
It feels so fresh, yet still sounds like Deftones. Definitely influences from their past albums. Everyone sounds so rejuvenated and on point.

Totally fresh. Can't recall Deftones being as energetic as they sound on Ohms. Even lyrically (specially on Genesis) they sound more positive and motivated. The boys must be in a very good point in their lives rn.

If Gore had been produced by Terry or Nick Rasc, it would be as praised as some of their other albums. I think the songwriting is mostly there, it's just the production that sucks.

^Kinda agree but I think Xenon and (L)Mirl are bottom tier 'tones. Not a huge fan of Geometric and Pittura either even though they've grown on me a bit and probably would sound much better with good production. It's definitely not entirely bad and had lots of potential.

Totally agreed, Gore is actually one of their better albums imo even tho it's not produced/mixed right. SNW and KNY are my favs, and the new one sounds like it's a mix of the s/t and KNY which is promising.

Checking the discog lately and this is honestly one of my favs. Maybe people see it as their "pretty" record in a bad way? Because the songwriting is pretty great in places and there are plenty of riffs too contrary to what I read idk

They balance those elements really well on here, just wish the heavy parts had more punch. I don't understand wanting them to be more generic nu/alt. metal, like aren't there plenty of those bands out there if that's what one wants to hear?
Same argument with wanting Opeth to be a dm band. Now, wanting them to go back to making their brand of prog metal, that I totally understand.

Yeah, I remember someone found Doomed User "embarrassing" because it had a "thrash" riff in it. Like????? ok let's go back to junz I guess (which are also in the same song by the way)

someone said in another deftones thread once “Gore is like someone programmed a deftones AI to write a deftones album” and that about sums it up for me at least
