I think Mike scrapped like 80% of it at least. The few times he talked about it he sounded disgusted which is probably a large factor why the band took such a left turn after that

True. He also told that Mendez was disappointed with another album in that style, right? That he thought it was time for something different too?

I'm glad they did change directions, we all know how much I love Heritage.

That's pretty interesting, wonder how that would have sounded had they released it

I like to think this album just shows how much Peter Lindgren and Martin Lopez really meant for this band. Heir apparent and Lotus eater keeps luring me back here but this record barely sounds like a coherent album compared to the better ones. Just a collection of decent songs and melodies. Of course this only holds true while comparing with other Opeth records. Mikael just set the bar so high. I guess this could feel like a master piece for some other band.

The way I've heard it is that Mendez knew mikael didn't really want to do another metal record and Mendez basically said "then don't do it, do what you want"

Heritage seemed like such a departure from anything resembling this sound, I always thought Pale Communion felt like the more natural de-evolution toward straight prog.

^ to be fair, Cauda's more metal-oriented than the other post-Watershed albums
