floyds a great band but they only appeal to one mood and one mindset, rush spans many moods, many feelings, and their songs have drive to them, whereas floyd is like "whoa duuuuuude" music

yeah its all essential music. floyd are more "innovative" but im just not always in that mood, plus rush have way fewer songs about how hard it is to be a rich and famous rockstar (rush only have 1)

True about Floyd, The Wall has a lot of bland moments and The Final Cut is almost entirely bland moments, both being categorized by Waters humongous ego minus the fun of Animals haha... I don't even bother with the post-Waters stuff either.

But their best stuff is brilliant, so I don't hold those albums against them.

whats weird is ive always thought genesis and yes even jethro tull have more catchy songs than floyd, i mean a lot of floyd sounds closer to tangerine dream to me which isnt super accessible. but somehow theyre the bigger band and more acceptable to enjoy. i mean half the people who 5d dark side would say close to the edge sucks, but everyone who 5d close to the edge digs dark side, its crazy

Have Frances 2'd and The Wall 3'd, and I don't fuck with Porcupine Tree.

I'm not going to lie, I haven't thoroughly explored Crimson (though from the albums and songs I've heard I do like them and plan to get to everything eventually)

Also you have my interest with Flying Teapot, might check it soon maybe

i wasnt talkin specifically about you, i mean just random people ive encountered on sputnik who think floyd was the only prog band until dream theater and porc tree just magically appeared, and then passed the torch to mars volta who passed it to fuckin between the buried and me

and i dont wanna sound negative on floyd, theyre killer but you know what i mean hopefully

Also yeah Yes is excellent though I didn't really dig the post-Close to the Edge stuff I heard,

Close, The Yes Album and Fragile are all brilliant though.

If we're talking best prog though Can's Tago Mago is perfect

I might need to revisit it, but my biggest problem with Relayer was it that it seemed like they were trying to recreate the same basic skeleton of Close with an "epically long song" followed by two shorter but still somewhat long songs and that wasn't nearly as catchy or crazy as Close.

Worst band shirts to see on people are Ramones shirts, literally some people I've talked to think its just a fashion company...

i dont think they did that on purpose with relayer, to me it sounds different from all their other stuff. very busy and exciting music, and their only record with a strong jazz element, they were smokin weed to billy cobham im sure
