Ending of burden is just baffling. Did Mikael hate this kind of opeth so much in this point or did Steve Wilson mess with his head with gimmicky song endings. I feel like I'm being attacked by the funny mustache era Mikael mid album. The watershed of the watershed. Awfully ruins the mood of the album after the strongest songs, readying listener for the weaker second half.

This album has a weird cheeky vibe going. I don't care for the weird endings of Burden, The Lotus Eater, or the high-pitched trailing off of Heir Apparent, but those songs are fantastic otherwise. I also love Coil and Hessian Peal. The other two, Porcelain Heart and Hex Omega, are fine too. That crazy off time drum solo in the former is fun. I wouldn't mind if they continued in this direction.

This is nowhere near perfect imo. A really disappointing end to the end of the metal era of Opeth despite the first 3 tracks being pretty great

It's good but Hessian Peel outclasses it by a mile still. it's wandering progginess works great as the outro tho.

I admire the adventurous proginess of it, I wish they kept going in that direction. It was interesting, if not particularly good. I just find it to be one of their clumsiest ham-fisted songs. Harlequin Forest did this kind of thing way better and with more class

Yeah that wandering progginess is so super tasty. Plus those Axe bits in the final minute or so are amazing. Lovely tune.
Hessian Peel is another high agreed.

I'm so morbidly curious about that scrapped follow-up to this. I bet it sounded a lot like this but with even more cheese & ham

Yeah think so too. Which could have been really cool!
Or maybe parts of that ended up on Heritage or subsequent releases anyway. In altered form maybe.
