The drumming on GR > drumming on all other Opeth albums IMO. It was Lopez' masterpiece.

Oooh, well, the drumming here might be just as good as on GR I'd say. Totally different styles though, but both awe-inspiring.

I haven't listened to this in a while tbh so I probably need to revisit, but I think the drumming on GR is what pushes it above every other Opeth album for me.

I wouldn't argue there, it stands proudly among their best works, it could very well be their crowning achievement.

López did a good job on GR that's for sure. It might be on par with this one regarding the drums

This one's drumming is more challenging to play, but Ghost Reveries' drumming is just better overall. Both top of the game in their respective genres though.

Just listened to still life as my first opeth experience, how does this compare?

This is totally different. This album is when they shifted more towards a 70's Prog Rock style of sound. If you enjoy that style of music then you'll like this. However, if you want more like Still Life, try Blackwater Park, Ghost Reveries, My Arms Your Hearse.

Then eventually try Morningrise, Damnation (a lot more mellow, but amazing) Can't go wrong either way with an Opeth album : )
