idk why i assumed johnny would be the kind of guy to take that kind of response like an adult lol
|
| |
oh yeah damn your "response" tantrum of seven layers of jaded sulk where you accused me (inaccurately) of talking down this record's precious unquestionable significance as a shoegaze milestone, yeah yikes sorry for not taking that one more seriously

hey wasn't mbv suppose to release a new album like 5 years ago???
|
| |
Album Rating: 5.0
the main takeaway from that should be that all those bands that have "topped this", with their super efficient modern production, are usually just trying to ape this anyway, so I don't think that argument is very compelling

Album Rating: 4.0
what about that fact that this sounds sorta funny?
|

"all those bands that have "topped this", with their super efficient modern production, are usually just trying to ape this anyway"
hinges on the dicey assumption that influence = superiority. it's a moot point that shoegaze is not the genre to mine for originality, but going the rym gazerbro route of de facto pedestalling Loveless over all the many, many records that remotely sound like it ends up with a misplaced sense of hierarchy that stiflingly underrepresents the range of atmospheres and moods the genre caters to
i don't really care either way about any given record being given a consensus nudge over this, or this really being anyone's favourite shoegaze record ever. its sound is hugely representative of the genre and its craft is intricate as anything - fair shits, respect, worthy flagship. however, championing it as an untoppable genre peak (especially off the back of production mythos) or staunch heel-digging against even the most idiotic casual critiques (ty colton) gets a well-earned instant eyeroll as a lazy retread of a boring genre narrative that discourages exploration and turns the whole ongoing story of shoegaze into something overdiscussed and vastly reductive thank you for coming to my tedx astrobrite is better
