True, but they really envoke that feeling, but then again, so does Floyd.
All of this prog talk makes me wanna listen to Zappa and Can honestly.

Here's the thing: Rush are way more proficient than Floyd. But are they better? Nope. And it's because Floyd connects with you. Rush sounds good. But do you listen to them for an experience? I've tried, and it doesn't work.

rush is somewhere between prog and hard rock, and then synth rock in the 80s, then a bit of pop, then rock, then dunno, then heavy metal?

rush isn't on the "deep" side of music like PF would be, but I enjoy rush a hell of a lot more

Rush is a hard rock band agreed with a prog era to their resume.......guest, some hear it and some dont
|
| |
Just "rock" is fine if you want an umbrella term for all eras.

is it Rock Bottom? That one is very good.
I'd suggest Third, but their self-titled is probably the best place to start. Third is a four-song album that's a lot more jazz-inflicted, but the self-titled is moreso them dabbling in psych, jazz and whatever else they could do. At this point, they had Kevin Ayers (known for being the subject of John Cale's "Guts" and his own solo albums, such as Joy of a Toy), who left after the debut. Robert Wyatt handled drums and vocals up until Third (on "Moon in June", the final SM song with vocals), in which they completely ditched vocals, which was something he didn't quite like, which led to his firing after Fourth. At the time of Rock Bottom, he was now in a wheelchair for life due to an accident during a drunken stupor.
Forgot to mention Daevid Allen of Gong was a founding member of Soft Machine, and Andy Summers of The Police played with them for a short period in 1968 before being sacked; they also toured with Jimi Hendrix in 1968/9, which was a factor in their change from psych to jazz fusion.
