Yeah he started singing a bit lower as time passed. Some of his shrieks on the early Rush records are laughable.

But seriously Someguest hit the nail on the head, sterile. The drums are good, but the vocals are weird shrieks, and everything else (guitar work, bass work etc.) is robotic as hell. Plus they take way more cues from heavy metal than they do from psychedelic music, which to me is ugh.

They're far from terrible, but they're not at all what I like about prog.

2112 is one of the best prog songs ever recorded though

Just a shame their late 80s and early 90s output was sub-par

Could never get into Rush for some reason, although the drumming is great.

arsmoriendi is right, rush isn't pure prog. but 1) drums rule, 2) guitars rule, 3) synths rule later on, 4) bass work is fucking terrific, 5) singing is great in teh 70s and even better in the 80s

They certainly have their moments but overall it's not as satisfying a listen as an album such as 2112 or Moving Pictures.

Rush is barely a prog band agreed, we're talking 6 albums or so out of 19 that fit the genre. Tuna dude, considering some of their material sub par is a stretch. We're talking bottom of the barrel at a 3.2 overall - not too shabby man.

I'll be the first to admit that their sound is not for everyone, as biased as I am with them.....

Yep. Rush has never had any psych elements, and that makes it just too straightforward with little atmosphere.

Yeah Rush certainly aren't one of my favourite prog/rock bands. I like their proggiest albums best but at the same time they're not really my style of prog (what that is exactly I'm not too sure).

What? It doesn't, in fact I generally prefer my prog less proggy in style.
