Colton Shields literally almost bankrupted Creation Records making this, regardless of whether it sounds good or not clearly he did something that other bands couldn’t/didn’t directly replicate.

this is an overstated argument and tbqh outright irrelevant to everything made since DAWs became commercially viable for everyone ever. shields' guitar tone, this particular set of dense layerings and MBV's famously inefficient production methods have their own peculiarities, but the strength of this album's production and (esp) songwriting have been topped by a load of acts including MBV themselves

There’s some truth to that Johnny but I do feel the fact remains that of the 100 something other shoegaze albums I’ve heard nothing quite achieves the range of guitar tones and the layering of them that this album does. I mean Siamese Dream probably has a similar amount of overdubbing on the guitars but it’s not going for the same thing as this. Like Colton though I’m open to more examples.
