If Jane Doe/You Fail Me didn’t come before this, I think it would be more well regarded in the discog. So many straight up amazing moments here

Agreed with that. I think the weight of expectation hurt this somewhat. I mean it did for me on release, but it also makes sense from a going thru their discog chronologically / retrospectively point of view.

I’ve been doing the discog run too! Definitely agree with your point and it didn’t help Axe followed this up also. Still an excellent record on its own merits. The title track to Grim Heart is an insane run really showing the band’s range

"Grim Heart/Black Rose is amazing and I have no idea why people shit on it so much"

That song is one of the crowning achievements in their career imo absolutely outstanding

If you dig Grim Heart please check out Only Living Witness. Legendary Boston band whose vocalist does a guest spot on that track. They sound like Alice In Chains with hardcore riffs

It’s fuckin sick, tyvm

What other projects is he involved with? Because he drastically developed his vocals from Only Living Witness to this… like this sounds much more clean and, idk, more palatable to maybe a more mainstream audience? Which isn’t shit talking, I think how smooth his vocals come across is a good counter to how vicious Jake sounds

during the site outage i was spending quality time with the verge. i get why this is lesser verge but idk why people think this is actually not very good lol. it's kind of all over the place with genres and less uniform than other albums but i still really dig it. no heroes, plagues and grim rose is up there with their best three song run in their career. grim rose is honestly a masterpiece, at least top 5 song of theirs for me. always love when they go that direction, they pull it off so well. i dig the more post-hardcore focused back half as well, trophy scars and lonewolves are catchy and great. kind of felt every time i die-ish especially with bannon's delivery on those.

main issue here is the mix. it's so muddy in a bad way and bannon's vocals are mixed in such an odd way that lessens the viciousness. riffs just lack a bit of punch. but still, great album. feels more like a good comp album when their others are so intricately constructed and laid out.

@Wildcard When OLW broke up they formed a new band called Miltown. I haven't checked them out personally, but I know their 90s record is just recently seeing the light of day. There's also Milligram and Septic Youth Command which I haven't heard as well.

@Futures great assessment as usual. I do kind of agree about the production, the title track was one of the first Verge songs I heard and the mix threw me off. As I've become more familiar with hardcore it's less of an issue but I can see the argument. Love seeing Lonewolves get a shout, I always loved that track

appreciate it brother! it feels like they were trying for a more raw mix and it just didn't work. because they did that again with all we love we leave behind and perfectly nailed it. but yeah it's not horrendous or unlistenable just a bit off. lonewolves is just so fun. vengenace is another deeper cut here i really dig, that ending breakdown goes so hard.

dude that would be sick, would be a cool opener. that riff is so simple but one of the heaviest i've ever heard. just floored me first listen. 5 minutes of it shows how good it is haha!
