This is a great album and Isis is a great band.
I don't consider them these gods that everyone else seems to, though, and this album is far from a masterpiece.

I've not been able to give any band in this genre a 5 because I always end up comparing them to Neurosis, and they all come up short in the end.

But to me, every band in this genre rips off Neurosis. (Some more blatantly than others). Don't get me wrong; I dig Isis, Minsk, MOTA, etc, but it all comes back Neurosis. I'm also a little more stingy with my 5's than most. Some sputnikers will give a 5 to whatever's on their ipod at the moment.

i don't give 5's out easily either: 613 ratings and 8 5's. this album just connected with me in a really profound way.
and i think it's a bit unfair to say everyone rips off Neurosis. sure, they're the fathers of the genre but that's like saying it's hard to enjoy Defeater because they aren't the ones who invented melodic hardcore.

'Rips off' is probably a little harsh. I'll rephrase and say 'borrows'. And it's not like I don't enjoy listening to Isis or whoever. I just always compare other bands in the genre to Neurosis because they're the standard.

tbh, it's the exact same thing with me.
it's not that these guys are bad. they're really not. but in comparison to neurosis, they just aren't nearly as interesting. i've only heard a portion of neurosis' discography and, as a whole, it's far superior to isis' entire discography.

They're the standard in your opinion though.
post metal is such a new genre that there really shouldn't be debate over the "standard" for it. it's still pretty clearly neurosis. maybe if post metal isn't a redundant genre in a few years there'll be time for a new standard, but since post metal is already a redundant genre, i think not
