Tonally I quite vibe with this album…but in terms of songs and compositions drawing me back long term? Doubt it. Maybe.
That last Black Midi I listened to for a bit and then…nope

i believe they've said the bassist will be taking over vocals

They don't NEED vocals, but I'd say it would help them. The lyrics and the crescendos work well.

I definitely vibe with this much more than the latest Black Midi album. Probably more than the Squid one too.
Folks into this might get something out of last week’s new deathcrash album, also from the Windmill scene but much more straight Slint-esque slowcore/post-rock.

Yeah it’s nuts right now, next week is also stacked, but it looks like things will chill a bit after that.

Agreed it is nuts. Rolo Tomassi and Persefone are winning the race right now.

That deathcrash album was aight but wasn't too exciting for me, just a solidly decent slowcore thingy.

It (the deathcrash) is definitely overlong but it’s pretty great in its best moments (mostly toward the front) imo

Ziggy predates both of those.

for those interested, this interview outlines the band's plans going forward atm: https://blog.roughtrade.com/gb/recounting-ants-from-up-there-by-black-country-new-road/?fbclid=IwAR0dOjQGKdobZ7bMfHiCa0MM3ix-vZxAdwKLX7Icp15vSIJHPYi1MRGzoGk
interesting move they won't be playing any previously released songs on tour though, but i guess i understand considering how personal some of these lyrics seem to be.

tyler's voice is absolutely superb if you've seen the bootleg of her at the windmill. her songwriting is quite idiosyncratic and unique too, they could do a lot worse than her taking over on vox

"He has a pleasant voice. The backing music reminds me of the annual [...] recruiting lecture, but is pleasant enough in its simplicity. The cover reminds me I owe you a pair of beard trimming scissors."
- my dad. ig I'll have to start warming him up to Tyler

The music being ‘pleasant enough’ sums it up really, still a bit of a bloodless enterprise all told

Last year’s Springtime is close to a recent ‘full blood’ comparison for this album for me I guess, that album just viscerally connected where this doesn’t. I’d consider both ‘art rock’ at heart too.
This definitely has its moments though, Haldern is growing on me.
