personally the only other option i'd point to is Augment, but this slightly outpaces it imo - Shadow Autonomous, Lunar Halo, and Memory Fiction are all perfect

Venin I feel like you should like Drift a lot.

I don’t think JT needs to work on anything capability wise, just needs to insert variety more often. He clearly shows he can do it

Drift is great, feels a bit held back on the production side of things but I'd put it in 3rd or 4th place

Erra will always be perfect from Impulse > Augment > MOC EP for me. Apparently a lot of the lyrics on Drift were written by Ian too. His stuff was so nature inspired.

MISS THE DEEP BASS MIX OF AUGMENT ALSO. WHY NOTHING HAS NO BASS NO MO YO?

obv this record is a big comeback for them. but it also is just such a shining turd in terms of all the worst parts of new erra, and best parts.

they went to proggy mathy shit instrumentally which is cool, but their mixes since Drift have been so fucking trash you can't even really enjoy it.

and this is the first record JT FINALLY is not a liability. oddly, jesse's weak points become the liability. at least its not JT's inability to scream beyond 1 mid range note for every 3 minute song over 10 tracks lol

idk every aspect of drift and neon here is done way better. like electric twilight and lunar halo are finally the good versions of all the mixolydian drop g flat stuff on neon and the poppier styles and pretty instrumental sections of drift are also way better here since jesses writing more engaging and catchy melodies. gimme vanish canvas and divisionary any day over luminesce and skyline, not to mention the ridiculously detailed and gorgeous start of eidolon that recalls and way elaborates on the hypnotist's calmer instrumental sections

this is definitely one of jesses sharpest albums as a songwriter and a vocalist imo but like if you dont like him here then this isnt the album for you lol. also this mix is waaaaay fucking better than the last two

i ilke divisionary a lot actually. this record is cool and i will probably look back on it with better lenses, but for a metalcore album, the weird song structures and jesse's annoying ness make it something i'd just never put on, whereas Augment's beefcore shit is 100% something i return to

Jesse is like one of the high points here, and something tells me you wouldn't like Ghost Atlas.

jesse is the high point here given he wrote fuckin everything instrumentally other than alex. even given the enormous amount of talent within the old lineup (garrison being the greatest harsh vocalist ever imo) jesse has always been my favorite part of the band and i rlly hear his voice as a songwriter through these guitar parts more clearly than i have in a while, not to mention this is the best his singing has ever sounded imo (which makes me realllly hyped for ghost atlas next year).

i reiterate its no impulse and augment because those albums are next level on every instrumental layer. the old lineup is practically a supergroup in my eyes as far as the level of talent each member brought to the table where this album is more centered around one guy going absolutely apeshit the whole time (plus jt finally proving his worth as a competent vocalist lol homie kinda brings it) but jesse finally stepped it the fuck up within the main band and i still cannot stop jamming it

i actually don't care for ghost atlas. i love the idea of what he's doing - the ambience, the guitar tones, whatever. i just find his persona too whiny.

that saaaaaaid the 2 EPs by ghost atlas fuck. fell off after that for me idk why

@onion gets it. great breakdown. i may be a little too harsh on jesse - he's doing all of this a decade later and im sitting here eating my cereal judging it. props

idk maybe you just have a big problem with the vocal style guys like him have while a girl like me eats this shit up. rarely is a singer "too whiny sounding" for me.
