I'm convinced I'll never get sick of it. I could listen to Pope every day and it's still just as captivating and emotionally devastating

Am I crazy to hear trip hop elements in this?

This album is pretty good but in the end probably Copeland's worst. Ixora was far superior. Are they even a rock band anymore smh.

why is it important that they stay a rock band

Woops, forgot to answer your question, ButtBoy. Lots of the vocal effects and the beats throughout this album remind me of triphop. Suddenly is probably the song that creates that association for me the most.

It's called preference.
For me, this album meanders a little bit too much and could have benefited from a little bit more aggression.

I'm not doubting that you're entitled to a genre preference, merely that you seemed to use it as the basis for ranking this last in their discography, which seems shortsighted.

Isn't that the case with most people though? I checked RYM, and this doesn't seem to have the highest average, as far as the band is concerned. Perhaps I should check out their other stuff.

Not saying that ranking this last isn't popular elsewhere either. Just that saying something isn't rock is a poor reason for condemning it.

A lower RYM ranking by itself wouldn't provide much evidence that people rate this poorly on the grounds that it's not rock. And it is a lower rating on those grounds that Sowing was taking issue with. (And I guess even if most people did rate lower on those grounds, it wouldn't show that that is a good thing to do.)

Eh, Sowing beat me to it.

But surely, the majority of the people who rated the album are the ones who enjoy their previous material? Which leads to the point that fans of the band did not enjoy this as much as their previous stuff.

Wait, so they sounded different before this album?

"But surely, the majority of the people who rated the album are the ones who enjoy their previous material? Which leads to the point that fans of the band did not enjoy this as much as their previous stuff."
I get what you're trying to say but assuming that everyone in a particular sphere (such as RYM) rated this album lower on the grounds that "it's not rock" is an awfully big leap. Surely they all had their own reasons, and again, condemning music because it doesn't fit nicely into your preconceived notion of what the band should sound like is stupid. For example, I like mewithoutYou a lot - they're my second favorite band ever - and I view them as a post-hardcore/indie outfit. If they released an electronic album next, wouldn't it be dumb for me to say "this is my least favorite album of theirs because it's not indie-rock"??? I'd digest the album all the same, and form a conclusion based upon the strength of the music. Maybe that's what that user a page back did with Copeland, who knows, but it was at least poorly articulated.

I am listening to Ixora right now, and it's the same music subgenre - whatever this is (I thought it was dream pop, but apparently, it is not that). Regardless, I do not understand what he meant by "meandering too much" and "not enough aggression". This record relies on a different breed of dynamics, which granted, I find lacking and not impactful here, but aggression is definitely not the thing it would benefit from, in my opinion. Also, Ixora so far sounds much better than this, so again, I can get behind the opinions of the band's fans (not the guy on the previous page) who think this is far from their best outing.
