Annoying as fuck that people just assume that if you dislike this album you just didn’t listen to it. Bitch I spun it at least 15 times in its first month.
And like i said, I could do without friend’s who prioritize stanning a stranger over actual real life friendships. Earl doesn’t give a fuck about you.

earl doesn't give a fuck about you [2]
but only if you're white he clowns on his white fans all the time and i love it tbh
but this album is straight perfection and if you don't see it, give it another 5 or so years and then come back to this masterpiece. if you don't think this and IDLSIDGO are absolutely perfect,
and emotionally grave records that will transcend most rap albums of the time, then you're tripping on some oldhead shit harddd

it's almost 2020 and the oldheads still want more unoriginal and trashy boom bap shit lmfao i will never get it

Rowan, me and you have a closer connection than you have with Earl, tell me how that makes you feel.

i laughed too hard at that cuz you're too right hnjsnsjsh

Just cuz this is better than trashy modern rap artists doesn’t automatically make this good.

that's exactly what an oldhead who doesn't get this record would say ;)))

Well I think that people trying to do boom bap in 2019 is pretty annoying too. Someone like Joey Badass who can def rap just goes on boringgggg beats.
Just because someone doesn't like this doesn't mean they're an old head who thinks that rap stopped being good in 97. I think the songwriting on this is dog shit. There's nothing engaging about his flow or the beats.
I listened to this multiple times and every time it got worse. It feels like twice it's length. It's such a trudge to get through, and that's from someone who listens to 80+ minute albums every day. It's whack

mayhaps one could consider the artistic merit of expressing inner turmoil and depression through lethargy.
rather listen to Organ Tapes for that.

pill friends and teen suicide aka american pleasure club are the best bands for lethargy imo. the dc snuff film/waste yrself compilation is prob one of the most overlooked albums this decade

i dont see organ tapes as a lethargic artist tho tbh

I get that people say the fact that this album is non-engaging “fits the feeling” but fuck I just disagree with that sentiment so hard. Albums can reflect mental illness without being a slog. Just look at the Downward Spiral, so fucked up yet mentally engaging from start to finish.
This album belongs in a modern art museum, but not one of the high conceptual trippy ones, more like the museums full of recycled garbage sculptures & schizophrenic scribbles that snobs will stare at while stroking their pubic goatees.

As someone who’s been prescribed medication for depression for years, hearing an album that emulates that feeling is not something I ever want to subject myself to. It’s like y’all say “he sounds so depressed ❤️“ as if that’s a good thing to be...
|

people handle depression in different ways. sometimes when someone else is able to accurately capture that headspace (whether it be through music, movies, or something else), it creates a feeling of commiseration for people who are currently going through it. sometimes simply not feeling "alone" in how you feel is the most cathartic thing imaginable. of course everyone is different, though, so your mileage may vary. but this is certainly not a 'one size fits all' type of record.

| |
I just can’t help but feel like people aren’t empathizing with his depression, but instead fetishizing it.

if i didn't have bpd and addictions, i probably would think this album blows and is incohesive/incoherent lol

"you ain't enjoying this for the right reasons!" is a futile fight, man.
Better hills to die on, tbh

Don’t get me wrong, Downward Spiral is incredibly fucked up. But to me, it’s always listened as a warning like “don’t let it get to this point.” But this album is just straight up a guy battling severe depression, and people want to say that depression is what makes this album “go hard.”
Mark my words, when Earl (hopefully) releases an album where he sounds happy or at least is enjoying himself, people will criticize it for “not carrying the same emotional weight as SRS” or some bullshit like that.

Am I the only one who like... doesn’t think of this album as some sort depressing slog? Like sure that’s the main idea of the album but this thread is making it out to be “Peanut” stretched out for 25 minutes with the Downward Spiral comparisons.
“Cold Summers”, “Nowhere2Go”, “OnTheWay!”, “The Bends”, “Azucar”, “Veins” are all pretty lively sounding tracks imo that barely have to do with Earl’s depression aside from a line here and there
