I don't know if this has been said before (there's 32 pages) but Hetfield turned Newstead's bass down because of his ego and was basically telling Jason he wouldn't replace Burton. So in a way, it was a "tribute".

really? i love the production. tinny and raw as hell. this is how metallica should always be. my favourite by them. the riffs, the epic long songs, the solos, the drumming, james' gruff vocals... they're just so good on this.

it's got no power though - the drums click, and the bass is non-existent. It loses the impact and punch that it would have otherwise. If you want raw Metallica, kill 'em all sounds way better
