We Owe This gets way too much hate (as does Dark is the Way on the whole)
| | | Album Rating: 4.0
It's probably top three or four for me, opener-wise
| | | Album Rating: 3.5
It's better than Never Take Friendship Personal, at least. I'm listening to it for the first time in a
while and even though the chorus doesn't have a catchy melody, it works pretty good as an aggressive
chorus.
Actually I'm listening to NTFP right now and it's pretty good, a lot better than I remember.
Basically all their openers rock.
Also both DitW and New Surrender get too much flak from (different) portions of the fanbase, imo

Their earlier work doesn't do much for me, though it is still an enjoyable listen. New Surrender is a bit overrated, but it has some absolutely terrific songs on it.

Love the Truth Faith and Mother covers, for example.

You think a 3.5 is overrated for NS? Ouch.
I dunno, I dig We Owe This. The chorus is kinda repetitive, but I really like the verses/bridge.
| | | 3.5 is absolutely overrating NS. there is just no lasting value on most of the songs on that one.

the resistance, the feel good drag (re-released or not), retrace, soft skeletons, and miserabile visu are five of their best songs. a 3.5 sounds good to me

Agree with toxy. 3.5 is what I have it at, too.
NS has some of my favorite Anberlin songs. The Resistance is probably my favorite opener of theirs, too. That or Godspeed. Miserabile is def like top 3 Anberlin for me.
| | | The Resistance is the only one that I ever really listen to anymore from NS. Perhaps I should dust it off and see how it fares now.
| | | Album Rating: 3.5
The whole album's pretty atmospheric. In that context, even the weaker songs benefit from being listened to as part of the whole album

Miserabile! Miserabile! Miserabile!
You should listen to the last song, signal.
need to hear Lowborn again. Usually I buy Anberlin stuff right when it gets released, but I've been on the fence with this album.
| | | Album Rating: 3.5
You should. It's a definite grower. I was hesitant on if this was a 4 at all, but now it's a pretty strong 4.
| | | Album Rating: 4.5
I'm sure I will. I feel like I need to own this band's last album anyway.
I loved Atonement on my first run through of it. That was the only thing that really stuck out to me.

I honestly really like New Surrender. I feel like it's somewhat underrated.
| | | It's got some good jams.

New Surrender gets too much hate.
| | | Album Rating: 3.5
It's got some good jams, it just also happens to have their biggest collection of weak songs, aside from maybe Blueprints
| | | Some subjective opinions...
Blueprints is definitely their weakest. New Surrender is better, and Cities is better yet. I wouldn't put any of them above a 3.5 (although my ratings I'm sure don't reflect that, so don't get smart with me, those are years old). New Surrender, in hindsight, is honestly just as good as Cities (although Stephen's vocal performance, or the way he was produced, is not very inspiring) and Dark is the Way, apart from 'Art of War' and 'Down', is just a bit better than both New Surrender and Cities. Vital is their most consistent album (I'd only get rid of 'Desires'), and this one is Dark is the Way quality. They've had a good career, but I wouldn't pen them for ever having made a 'perfect album'.
| | | The closest final show they play to me is Seattle on October 13th at a venue you need to be 21 to enter. I turn 21 on that very day... what a fitting end to the band I grew up with.
Just because it's fun to talk about, here are the songs I still consider quality (rating 4 and up):
Blueprints: Readyfuels, Glass to the Arson, Cold War Transmissions
Friendship: Never Take Friendship Personal, Paperthin Hymn, Stationary Stationery, The Feel Good Drag, Dance Dance Christa Paffgen
Cities: Godspeed, The Unwinding Cable Car, There is No Mathematics (yes, I know), Dismantle.Repair, (*FIN)
New Surrender: The Resistance, Blame Me!, Younglife, Soft Skeletons, Miserabile Visu
Dark is the Way: We Owe This, Impossible, Take Me, You Belong Here (yep), Pray Tell, To the Wolves, Depraved
Vital: Self-Starter, Little Tyrants, Other Side, Someone Anyone, Intentions (actually one of my favourites now), Type Three, God Drugs & Sex
Lowborn: (as of so far) We Are Destroyer, Armageddon, Stranger Ways, Atonement, Hearing Voices
C-c-c-controversial.
